I still prefer The Pale Emperor to this but I'm glad he put out such a solid album, much like Simon I questioned him not keeping Bates around, I'm glad I like this

Manson in his prime was the last real "rock star" anyone old enough remembers his impact good or bad.

i actually went back out of curiosity today and listened to holy wood, mechanical animals and antichrist superstar and it makes this album sound even sadder. i have no idea where the praise is coming from for this record. not exactly an avid manson fan but at least he had something worthwhile to say rather than being a brooding, sad despot here. those three records were creative and vivid in their delivery where this is just a hypocritical man moaning idly.
when i see people talk about 'vulnerable' i'm really not hearing it. i just hear boring and shallow. any real self-reflection i take from these lyrics are about the equivalent of someone saying "YEAH I SUCK I'M LITERALLY THE WORST PERSON ON THE PLANET SO FUCKING WHAT" in place of actually exploring themselves in a meaningful and self-reflective way. it's a shitty look.

Heaven Upside Down is a solid record, the first half has some of his best stuff from last decade. It is a bit funny how detached We Are Chaos is from HUD sound-wise.

yeah, I think if he'd have gone from tpe to this it would have felt more organic. that's why I think hud is a step backwards, despite how solid it is.

Agreed, I feel like this record may be the first where Manson has truly detatched himself from his 90's sound and actually embraced a new direction. Each previous record, even inlcuding records like Eat Me Drink Me, he would experiment, but it seemed like he was dipping one foot into the pool of creativity/a new sound.
This record really has a theatrical and grandiosse scale without being too over the top and seems like Manson isn't holding back any punches with utilizing this new sound. Sure it has some signature Manson elements and it's certainly a Manson record, but it actually sounds like he's comfortable with this new sound rather then trying something new for the sake of doing it. I think all the textures and layers on each song shows the attention to detail that's been put into this.
