"Expansive and artistic, but also a little timid."
This has always been what Perfume Genius came off to me as, he's this guy exploring bold sounds, but his vocal delivery comes across as timid and vulnerable. It's a combination I haven't seen anywhere else in music

People really thinking this is a step down huh
This is fucking beautiful, but maybe because I'm homo

Im pretty sure im in the minority here, consensus seems to be this is at least on par with his other stuff, mostly superior.

He's had a pretty consistent run over the past 10 years but I'd agree that calling this a little timid is fair. Maybe it will reveal itself a little more with extra listens but it's just a bit plodding at times for me

I guess I don't see the lyrical themes as timid

it's a music album. lyrics aren't the only aspect that drive a mood home.

And not all music has to be energetic, especially when the music lifts the lyrics up, what's your point?

not sure if this is the same point botulist is tryna make, but imo the music is taking some emphasis out of the lyrics, not adding to it.
most of the slower tracks feel adrift, directionless or vacuous.

my point is that if a song sounds timid to some, then it sounds timid to them. you're the one tackling every small criticism people are bringing up. it's going to be okay.

Whoa Describe is a bop

Describe is beautiful but definitely not what I'd consider a bop. The distant guitar crunches sound awesome then the way it falls off a cliff into a sea of ambience is really cool.

Very true. But I still think before the ambient latter half, it's definitely a bop or a jam or it goes hard or it slaps.

Haha I'm not trying to be the lingo police. 'On the Floor' is the biggest bop for me.

Agreed this is very much what I wanted No Shape to be, but I love both

No worries Sowing. I'm just trying to keep up with the cool kids.

I can see me bumping my rating with time, but for now it just seems like the first half is much stronger than the second. Standouts for me are: "Describe", "Without You", "Jason", and "On the Floor".
