I tried rewatching a NC video I haven’t seen in years and my god does he never stop moving his head. It was the most infuriating thing like god he has to have the most incessant neck pains

Yeah, those old NC videos haven't aged well at all. I used to love his work growing up, so it was tough facing the reality of how unfunny he actually was when I got older.
On a related note, have any of you watched the new AVGN? It was his first review in a long time to not be written or produced by the Screenwave guys, and the difference was night and day. Best video of his in a long time

I haven't watched the new avgn because his channel has been such garbage overall I had to unsub, his band is lolbad, and his podcast is too lazy it's somehow actually worse to me than any shitty cringey nostalgia critic material.

One of AVGNs coolest series for me is his Halloween special Monster Madness. It's less jokes and more affection for horror films and creature movies.
YouTube now is serious stuff, though. The quality of work you can find is amazing.

for me board james is the best. monster madness is good, the plagiarism thing recently was really pathetic though.
|
| |
I didn't hear about that. Admittedly, it has been a while. I get my horror fix in other places now like Dead Meat...
Something bad happen?

in a review for 28 Days Later james reads a bunch of lines that are copied and pasted from an existing review of the film from 2003, they claimed it was an accident and notes for the script got mixed up with the script itself over time. even if it was an accident it is lame that the entire recent monster madness season was written by random people

"it's somehow actually worse to me than any shitty cringey nostalgia critic material."
I definitely wouldn't say he's gotten worse than NC, but I agree that his recent stuff has been pretty bad. The screenwave team just needs to go already... I know James probably needs help here and there with his channel, but they're just making things worse

Tough competition out there. A lot of great works on YouTube now.

a major difference is that James Rolfe has still been able to occasionally show flashes of his old school brilliance. His review of Earthbound might be the best thing he's ever done, and that was 2017. Doug peaked in 2008 and has just been spiraling down since, though he's probably plateaued (or flatlined) at this point.
It's clear that James is not the problem, but those around him. Doug is his own problem.

As I said, I'd recommend AVGN's latest episode. A lot of it goes right back to 2007/2008-era AVGN, and it has no outside help from James' co-workers, so I'm really hoping he continues that direction going forward
Imo, NC's downward spiral really started with Demo Reel. Up until then I still enjoyed his work, but you could tell there was a noticeable difference between his pre-Demo Reel and post-Demo Reel work

personally I'd argue at least demo reel had some sort of effort put into it and had a concept with a script and attempts at acting, James podcast is much more shitty to me there is no conceivable type of effort put into it. I watched demo reel recently just to see what all the complaining is about, I actually thought it was better than the awful modern episodes of nostalgia critic. it definitely was bad, cost too much to produce and marked a big change in quality in his work but conceptually it could have been executed better, I can't say the same for most of what James does now. earthbound was great but that was already 5 years ago. also James' video addressing complaints explaining why he can't move his lights on the ceiling to get different shots was pathetic.

Speaking of James there was an interesting video can't remember what it was might of been The RISE and FALL of AVGN's Quality. But there's this interesting take that Mike Matei might of been an influence for the AVGN character since it was pointed out that Mike kind of acts like AVGN when he loses in games when he streams. James does seem to Strongly be more into movies and film since he has many types of videos about them like Monster Madness, top list, and other movie reviews that he dose with his friends. Of course he did AVGN because him and his friends thought it was funny including might and helped gave him the idea for the videos. Plus he used to make amateur films as a teen and made that god awful AVGN movie. Mike used to right the stuff for the AVGN along side James and managed the channel as well as let James have access to his game collection to help James out.

^ I think you're referring to the Lady Emily video; that was an incredibly insightful deep dive into the whole AVGN/Cinemassacre empire
