TLTDIRW is good, but this blows it away. Vigilance Perennial was my AOTY in 2017, but this is a step up from that as well in songwriting and man.. the production is so much better on this. Comparing the two, Vigilance Perennial sounds so boxed in, but this is so much spacious and breathes 100 times better. It works really well with their sound.

THIS IS HOW ALL FOLK INFLUENCED BLACK METAL SHOULD SOUND
or at least most of it

I think there are genres influencing this black metal way more than 'folk' tbh
I'd say there are more prog, prog folk?, heavy metal and hard rock elements than outright folk

My feelings towards this are similar but more in atmospheric black metal that has that "post" influence. I've heard so many bands just sound like post-rock with blast beats and screams over it, and it always sounds so stale to me, but FoR gets it right. The songs wander all throughout different themes and builds, but it never sounds generic. They do add that extra bit of folk sound, but it's like American bluegrassy folk sounds to the melodies, kinda like Panopticon in a way, and that fusion is just perfect.

i'm getting some strong classic rock vibes as well, but i feel folk is the prominent influence

This def has folk influences but I’d go as far to say that there’s also a huge traditional heavy metal influence here as well.

Also agreed, with the heavy metal influence. I get some serious doomy Pallbearer moments on this as well. It just covers a lot of ground in a really perfect fusion.

agree with the classic rock vibes. that's something that I've always enjoyed about this band.

what's great about it though is that it really doesn't feel like a fusion of things unless you really dig to parse out the influences ... it's pretty much seamless
