Gina harmonies makes all the soft vocal sections really ring out. John actually sounds good on his harsh vocals here. It's that mid zone he sucks on and stays away from here... part of the reason for the album success

I also think the production improvement contributes to its success too

I mean... ajfa has crystal clear production, if you pretend they recorded it without a bassist

It's a guitar album with audible guitar. Basically the opposite of the past few Baroness albums. Don't even get the comparison really

This is a p skippable album overall but Tourniquet specifically is one of their best tunes

Yellow and green is a great record. I really don’t get the hate it gets sometimes

This has some good stuff but it is very hard to sit through due to the ear grating production. [2] for tourniquet

Also took another look at this band's album arts and I feel like JDB has done nothing but improve his art game over time. This and Stone are fucking stunning pieces

There's a ridiculously cool part in "Choir" around 3:40 where the drums get very distorted but then they suddenly disappear and all that remains is an organ and JDB whispering over it.

Yeah John’s art game insane, but it’s common knowledge he spent more time mixing paint than music on this one

So the new Baroness album sounded so good it prompted me to re-listen to this and figure out what the hell went wrong. To make matters short, I ended up editing the CD FLAC files into a "remaster" of sorts. Tried to get rid of the audio compression and clipping and, thus, reducing a few decibels without having to lower the audio volume. The result? Well, it sounds much more listenable and you can actually discern the instruments and effects at least for the most part. The original mixes were compressed to oblivion and so there was very palpable hiss and clipping, and since Dave Friedmann is an incompetent idiot, he destroyed the dynamics of the songs. I was able to make it more dynamic without actually having to edit the treble or bass. I must emphasize, though, the mixing is absolute dogshit so there are parts where, even if discernable, the instruments sound distorted and fuzzy (it's definitely an intentional effect). To my surprise "Throw Me An Anchor" sounds okay now, but "Seasons" is destroyed without repair. The latter half of that song is simply lost in the noise. They would have to re-mix the whole thing to make it sound good. But I'm going to stick with my edit.

Here's the mp3 download for it: https://www.mediafire.com/file/tkeoytwxjnx0yor/2019-Baroness-Gold_%2526_Grey_%2528Noise_Reduction_Edit%2529.7z/file

If you'd like the FLAC files I'll post them if your shoutbox. Enjoy!

I dunno how all these audiophiles can watch most live heavy guitar music, sound is frequently way worse a mix than any compression or ‘loudness’ issues on tape

I mean, I prefer stuff to be well produced but also can get over it too - I can definitely ‘assess the album beyond the production choices’ almost 100% of the time

No you don’t understand I cannot enjoy any notated and performed sound unless it is reproduced in extreme fidelity what do you mean guitar distortion was originally an unintended artefact produced by malfunctioning equipment

I manually edit distortion and reverb out of shoegaze albums
