My buddy is singing this album’s praises even though he had no expectations. I might check this out. Is this a good place to start with this band?

"Sowing surprised Neon Wound is so low for you!"
neon wound is without a doubt one of the most mediocre silversun pickups songs i've ever heard

Better Nature was such a snoozefest outside of the first two songs on it, so I am not excited to listen to this, but I'm gonna do it anyway. I always loved the band back in the day, though

i'm nearly done my first listen and it's been pretty uneventful. i really like the title track, strawman, and songbirds tho

@Danred, no probably not. I'd start with Swoon.
Neon Wound grooves, man. Love the build to the solo.

album just restarted and yeah idk neon wound just sounds really generic and boring. i don't get what the big deal is... probably their weakest opener ever tbh

I don't get that vibe at all. I mean, it's not one of their best ever songs, but it's a more than serviceable opener I think. The cheeky opening is great: "Hello my friend, it's nice to see you again"

ngl that felt kinda cliched and forced to me
decent song but like gyro said kinda unmemorable, esp to open the record

Loving the office references itt. Warms my heart.
|
| |
i feel like neon kind of sets up these cool ideas but never really goes anywhere with them... kind of indicative of the album as a whole.
|
| |
hell yeah! the office is prob my most watched show lol. kind of wish i had one of those MiB amnesia devices so i could experience it all over again

Correct. Straw Man is a microcosm of the entire album too. I still remember hearing the first minute and saying "holy shit" out loud and mentally preparing myself for a top 5-ever SSPU track. Then some violins played and it fizzled out like nothing even happened. Kind of a waste of a gorgeous melody and great instrumental progression to have it not culminate in something, anything, at all. It just ends like wtf.

@Sowing I'm a sucker for winks toward the listener so even though it's cheesy I dig it.

yeah i feel that way about neon wound too. like, it has some lovely stuff towards the end but it just kind of fizzles, like you said. when i'm listening to it i expect it to explode into some kind of awesome chorus and it just never comes. i don't think this is a problem on their other albums (esp when you have songs like the royal we and skin graph). they seem to be far more directed and energetic. they build and develop gorgeous melodies and know when to just go nuts with it. this is the blue-balls silversun pickups experience lol

lmao back when andy was insufferable beyond belief. and then in season nine he just becomes pathetic

precisely gyro, that should have been my review summary, ha!
totally random but does anyone else think "the wild kind" is one of their best songs? i adore it

my top 3 on Better Nature are Nightlight, The Wild Kind, and Tapedeck and those could all be top 10 songs by them on a good day so yeah, The Wild Kind is dope

I still prefer Common Reactor and Out of Breath as closers though. 2 of my all time favorite songs
