The 2nd Men

"This isn’t bad at all. Not understanding the hate here. Yeah it’s not one of their best. It’s not as good as Drones (which I personally loved, aside from Revolt and Aftermath), but it’s infinitely better than The 2nd Law, and even a little better than The Resistance IMO."

That's a kinda interesting take imo. In retrospect I wouldn't say Drones was that good. Actually Aftermath and everything after that song is so mediocre imo, I have quite a soft spot for the choir thing, but it's basically a cover and that's kinda disappointing.

Mercy is a worse version of Starlight, Psycho (while being fun) is just a little too long, just as The Handler's solo section. Defector is kinda repetitive, too, and a little meh, but these solos are just so fucking tasty :D And I actually like Revolt, for a similar reason why I like this album.

Imo The 2nd Law isn't too bad either, but it's sequencing is petty fucked up. Why do they put the songs with Chris on vocals at the end of the record, followed by two virtually instrumental tracks? Also the Chris tracks are weak imo. But the production on The 2nd Law is pretty good and more beefy than The Resistance. I basically embrace the sillyness of The 2nd Law. I just wish some songs weren't so close to already existing songs by Queen, Michael Jackson etc.

The Resistance is kinda safe for the most part. It's doing a lot of stuff they've already done in the past and it doesn't work as good. Still not too bad, and I love Exogenesis, even if these three songs are a little overrated imo. They're excellent.

@Larkinhill: yeah this tops 2nd Law and Resistance for me as well. Just a cut below Drones which was better instrumentally.

Some tracks are actually listenable in that pop/commercial concept they're trying to achieve...there's still a bunch of other annoying tracks here that makes this a poor work. This late 90's synth revivalism comes in fact a bit late (I actually dug when QOTSA made it on their last release)...maybe its my issue but sometimes this looks like the soundtrack of some dad's 90's VHS futuristic porn.

though it still lacks mayonaise and ketchup, super deluxe extras are somewhat more enjoyable (at least you feel some meat in it)
