dropped because i feel most of the songs aren't as effective at doing what they aimed for

not feeling "ponyboy", "faceshopping", or "whole new world/pretend world" at all, for example

wow I'm the other way around as I prefer the abrasive yet fleshy and flirtatious sound of those songs. The closer especially is my favorite off this. Immaterial is a great tune though.

i find it easier to connect to sophie's feelings and views of gender on the more traditional tracks, that's why i prefer them

Asdfp said earlier that "experiments require effort" and that's something I have on my mind a lot; the difference between experimental and avant-garde. Avant-garde, in my head, is actively going against the grain to get a rise out of listeners. You do it to make a statement against pop music, society, whatever you want. In a sense, it's meant to be grating. But experimental is just trying new things in music to see what sounds good.

This album teeters the line between those two things. The speaking bass on Faceshopping that actually has its own verses? Experimental. The way Whole New World completely falls apart at the end? Somewhat avant-garde.

I fail to hear how this is faux experimentation, one of the most interesting and forward thinking pop records I've ever heard.

Yet I've heard so many albums just like this in the last couple years. I know it boils down to personal preference (as plane pointed out, 22, A Million was equally as indulgent in wankery and I adore it), but anyway I'll stop debating and just give this a second try now.

I've listened to this 3-4 times now and have yet to form a solid opinion of the album as a whole.

If anyone else has suggestions on who does this sound better I'm all ears. I would also disagree in calling this wankery.

I could be off-base in suggesting this as a comparison, but did FKA Twigs not master this style on the M3LL155X EP? Let's Eat Grandma also comes to mind, although I would not say they necessarily do it better.

Also fwiw I'm listening to this again in the afternoon (post-coffee) and it sounds amazing. Now I'm not sure if I hate this or love it. I'm just going to avoid rating it until it tips the scales one way or another.
