Still don't get how one can call it preachy... Is Chance telling you how you should appreciate the things in your life, how to live your life, how the listener should be religious and if not you're doing your life wrong? When he discusses religion it's mostly dealing with his own life, not dealing with the listener at all.

That's precisely what turns me off about the lyrics SBMike. People listen to music to relate to it. When Chance or anyone really is discussing religion within their music, even if it is their own personal experience with it and not preaching, it still can come off like indirect preaching to a non religious listener. I don't think it's preachy per se, I just can't relate to it as Jesus or God are entities or people I don't really care for to be quite frank.

Even if you take music out of the equation, and it's a celebrity or athlete thanking God for the win or whatever, it still rubs me off the wrong way and I immediately lose interest. Good on them though that it inspires them, there's no problem with it. I just don't relate to it, which is why I don't really like this album as much.

@Ciregno Okay, I can understand that then. Me myself, I grew up on Gospel music and church although now that I'm older, and in college I'm not very religious myself. I still can enjoy the music though. I guess it just depend on who you are and your thoughts on it in general, but that's with any type of music...

@SBMike, for sure, and also, there's absolutely nothing wrong with gospel influenced music either. It's just how the lyrics are presented to me. Like Toad said, D'angelo's album Black Messiah is one of my favorite albums that lyrically presents itself well without getting too gospel like.

Yea, Black Messiah was a whole other beast. But, D'Angelo is also a lot older than Chance and has studied it for much longer. So his infusion of the elements and lyrically the album was done to a tee. So, yea he definitely did it better but I believe Chance did an exceptional, masterful job at it as well.

Also, I don't think the Gospel aspect is a gimmick, but just the way he incorporated it with the big and long choir vocals and such could be off-putting to some. Also, that's why earlier I said don't classify this as just a gospel-rap project because it's not consistent all the way through the project but is there for the most part.

"but i feel like gospel music isn't really the foundation of this album; it's like a little gimmick that adds shine to half the tracks."

My exact thoughts. Them Holy Rollers eating up this album like communion already calling this a classic.

Lol when I said that I didn't mean it in a negative way at all, the gospel-esque songs here are the strong points of this album.

the second Blessings seriously is the most emotional song I've ever heard. I don't I've ever cried from listening to music but this hits such a nerve (in a happy way, obviously). Wasn't a massive fan of this but there's some great ideas that kind of go nowhere, ie the Francis and the Lights autotune at the beginning of Summer Friends and the second half of How Great.
