Can anyone explain what the album story is? He has a vision as a kid that he gets killed... by himself?
|

This is pretty neat. Im surprised it took me so long to hear of them.

haken is pure love

I just can't get into this style of prog. metal. This album is definitely guilty of trying to do way too much and go in way too many directions to come across as a focused artistic effort. I get it, but I definitely don't dig it.

This is a lot of music, needs sime time I guess. I like the dream theater-ness and the lack of Ross' over processed harmonies

The Mind's Eye has Metropolis all over its main riff lol

Mandatory Haken inquiry every couple months is here : Is the vocalist still god-awful?

Nothing has changed. Ross was never awful though

So I think the story for Vector is pretty clear and straightforward.
But with this one ... there is a premonition of the main characters own death ... some romantic stuff ... a girl that's a shapeshifter and the protagonists sister (maybe not a real sister, but a metaphorical one?) ... some stuff about suicide and immortality ... and everything coming full circle ... I have no fucking idea what's going on. This is not an example for good story telling. Album rules though

This is better than Vector, agreed

"Can anyone explain what the album story is? He has a vision as a kid that he gets killed... by himself?"
Nope, no fucking idea about the story. But I could see the protagonist being the killer and the boy who gets killed being someone else. Idk who this shit is supposed to make sense tbh, time travel? A good album, but not a good story concept imo. It's hard to translate a complex story into music and a few syllables. You've got to keep it simple

Many seem to hate Ross' vocals. Gotta say they took a while to grow on me as well, but he's solid.

Yeah, I might be convinceable of that. Coming back to this it really sounds great. Production is good and vocals are convincing for sure. Ross sounds amazing here, and the more 'old-fashioned' prog-rock sounds is very nice. Deathless is a stellar song

Idk about these guys. Seem to be way too derivative of DT and the like. I mean, the first half of this album is basically an inferior attenpt at Metropolis Pt. 2. Polaris=TDoE and Insomnia has a riff from that track in it. Not big on the symphonic stuff and big choruses either. Their later stuff gets better for sure.

I don't really agree with this review. Seems a bit fanboyish.
Personally, I don't think it's that uncommon for a band to be refined by their second album, especially a prog band. I expect it.
I.m.o. what they refined to on here is less lustrous than everything they did before and after it. Sort of feels more basic than Aquarius, but with a coat of shine thrown on top... which doesn't really equate to anything for me.
Glad you enjoy it, though.
