Surprised I haven’t commented before. Very nostalgic, I bought the CD blindly cause of the album cover, on a trip in Italy shortly after the album came. I was just a teenager having only listened to metal for a few years, discovered Opeth too around the same time.
Needless to say this made an impression; I hadn’t heard anything with this kind of intense, melancholic atmosphere before. I remember my favorites that I replayed endlessly were These Woods Breathe Evil, Falling World, Lights on the Lake, and the t/t. Those two latter songs are my favs currently, and I’m glad this has held up so well even today.

Not sure why this gets hate here. This is their second highest rated album (after their debut) on pretty much every other site.
Simple and to the point. Great album. This one has a more sinister sound than previous outings and feels unique in their disco because of it. The opener is such a cool no-frills track and usually the one I recommend to first time listeners of the band.
