Yeah of course it won't even be close. It'll still rip, though. Death Angel are one of the few old thrash bands that still put out quality stuff. Overkill, Testament, and Kreator as well.

Eh, I have yet to like a recent album from those greats. Although the newest Artillery album was a pleasant surprise...

People aren't going to like this opinion, buuut...

I think this album has the same problems that many other modern metal releases with great ambition and surrounding hype have: It is more original than it is actually interesting.

Sure, I heard a lot of cool ideas, which I've rarely, if ever, heard before, and sure, it is technical, largely-weaved, and very complex music, which claims to have vision... But I don't see myself listening to this more than a few times, and I don't see myself humming some of the songs on my own, or learning them.

Additionally, I'm perplexed by the "thrash" label. This really is progressive metal, with DM vocals. What elements are there at all that make it thrash?

best tracks:

LCD

Pteroptycon

Pillars of Sand

Collapse

Recharging the Void

I found it impressive that the last track lasted for 13 minutes, yet it didn't feel that long. The transitions and development were done very smoothly and organically, so it felt shorter, which is good.

Eh, this is definitely thrash based. Progressive thrash, as Erik himself said earlier in the thread. And these are definitely not death metal vocals, if anything they're closer to the higher shrieks of modern black metal, in my opinion. Nevertheless I would still say they are thrash-based with a specific interpretation.

I'm not bashing your opinion, a 3.5 is still a pretty strong rating and reflects a positive opinion, but I think that your labels are a bit off, personally.

I mean, have an opinion, but calling this not thrash is pretty much wrong. Also LaughingSkull, I didn't realize. The one who 2.5'd Aspid.

I find that just about all the greatest thrash albums have a ballad and Collapse definitely delivers
