"don't think i've ever seen anyone say Reznor is one of the best vocalists of the 90s (which is most definitely a take worth shitting on) as opposed to admiring his talents as a producer and crass moodboard artist, to which end his voice is just one tool among many."
Reznor's a jack of all trades. Phenomenal producer and moodboard artist as you say, but I'd also place him among the greats in 90s rock voices. Cobain, Staley, Cornell, Reznor etc. they all do a wonderful job at to me the most important part - projecting emotion and feeling real.
"not sure why you're so attached to this comparison? it also projects Skinny Puppy as an underground/obscure/otherwise leftfield comparison, which (even as someone who doesn't give two shits for industrial) is mainly your own ignorance talking"
whether you meant it that way or not, it came off like "oh you like this artist? well you're just a mainstream POSER, listen to this lesser known artist that most likely doesn't provide the thing you like that the more well known artist does." if Skinny Puppy has an album like "The Downward Spiral" in terms of emotional gravitas, then i'll gladly take the L, but it comes off entirely snobbish to talk down someone's preference in favor of your favorite lesser known artist in the genre when you KNOW their reason for loving it isn't "oh the soundscapes are technically impressive blahblahblah".
"If this project “emotionally moved you” then you gotta go touch some grass" Lmao.

"when you think pop metalcore, you think architects or bmth. this band managing to play medium-sized venues in their home country i don't think counts as mainstream."
while i'm in complete agreement, these guys surprisingly have 300k more spotify listeners than architects
they're probably bigger than most of us just now hearing them for the first time realize tbh, and i reckon the bulk of their following is prob a bit younger than most of us, being a "tik tok" band after all

"lesser known artist"
yeah you're not doing yourself any favours here. SP might not have NIN levels of mainstream traction but they're easily established enough it's a closer equivalent (in most respects tbh) to bringing Radiohead into a conversation with a Coldplay fan
"I'd also place him among the greats in 90s rock voices. Cobain, Staley, Cornell, Reznor etc."
cute opinion thank you for universalising it

if we were gonna say singer id choose someone else
but it we are saying 'vocalist' then eugene because the man has glorious range and stylistic quirks plus a great gravelly voice
he can sing, scream, moan, gibber, shout, croon, whisper and bark with the best of them

Okay but like, what's the point in trying to talk down NIN to introduce them to someone who was emotionally moved by the likes of The Downward Spiral? Is there an SP album that's equivalent to that in emotional gravitas and feeling? It's more the approach to bringing them up that put me off and comes off pretentious. "oh, you love this album? you're shit for it, go listen to this other artist." like in what realm does that not sound... kind of shitty?

"I'm beginning to gather that some of the people who frequent this site are kind of mean to each other."
Wait til you scroll the average comment box on RYM and you'll wonder how it ever ended up this bad. I'm starting to think human extinction would be a good thing.

I probably should give Oxbow a shot at some point... I'll probably see them similarly to how I'd see like Mr. Bungle who I think are quite neat.
