I’m curious where all the more positive perspectives are ITT - the rating chart suggests there are quite a few 3.5-4 ratings out there but they seem quiet; pro critics and RYM have been more positive than here so far.
Myself after a few listens am leaning strong 3 to light 3.5. It’s certainly reaching for much more than it achieves but it’s still pretty nice. It’s brevity is to its benefit in that respect.

Maybe the users who felt it was a 4/5 are spending their time listening to it rather than reading our negative comments. XD

A 76 on metacritic honestly isn't even that good anymore

yeah i feel like albums rarely get a mediocre rating on metacritic anymore
which is unfortunate because it kinda defeats its purpose

They should realign their score qualifications honestly. A 70+ in the early 2000s meant it was exceptional, but now if an album doesn't average in the 80s it's probably not even worth your time. Critics have become decidedly less critical (not saying that's necessarily a good or bad thing, plus I'm not one to talk).

you used to get similar ratings for movies and music but you're right, films can still split opinion and end up getting a 40-70%...music seems to start at 70% and usually over 80%, barring two or three token 'everybody hates' albums that get about 20% or less.

Music critics are going the way of video game critics. If it's less than 80, it's awful. Honestly, it's such a bizarre scale anyway.
I remember when seeing something close to or over 90 on Metacritic was very rare. Now there are a handful of 90s a year. I suppose overall critic culture is more positive.
I've seen the same complaints in video games. I don't think the answer is to be excessively negative to compensate, either. Then again, everyone has their own understanding and interpretation of what these numbers actually 'mean'.
I think scores aren't helpful on their own. My own ratings won't make any sense unless their was some fuller context that describes their being. So aggregates are very awkward. They don't tell you much.

In general, ratings are gonna be higher for a band with as rabid a fanbase as Arcade Fire upon release unless it's a total and obvious failure. While I personally think this album is (mostly) a total failure, I don't think it's as obvious as Everything Now. Historically, Arcade Fire albums have typically had high critic scores with mostly positive fan reception, although there is always a loud minority decrying that the good old days are gone.
Everything Now flipped that script and it seems like there's no going back. So while the fans are happy there's nothing as offensive as Infinite Content or Chemistry, it'll take time for people to cool off of that fact and realize that all that's left is a collection of songs that don't have a lot of personality or direction.

Yeah I mean obviously pro critics are way too positive these days but I was more going relative to Everything Now (which had a 66 Metascore compared to this one’s 76) and the fact that most of the ratings of people speaking in the thread (and all 4 reviews) are 2-2.5 (similar to what most rated Everything Now here).

66 is still insanely high for that abomination (although it is low for Metacritic)
but yeah, critics are very kind these days and can't say I put much (if any) stock in the majority of outlets and their verdicts (same for games).

This is so much better than everything now though

I listened to this and it was pretty bad
Although I've heard much more obnoxious albums this year (see gang of youths and everything everything, the worst two records of 2022)

I like the Gang of Youths album a lot more than this one. Pikazilla and I don't share the same taste in music for the most part.
