This isn't really a post punk album and Protomartyr sound very much the modern distinction of post punk

Yeah this is much more goth/indie rock for the most part.

it does have those annoying-as-hell post-punkish vocals mind

I'd like this much more if there were additional Bloomsday-esque cuts, they vox are actually quite palatable on that one

yeah I guess, depends

there aren't really 'typical' post-punk vox by definition, as the 'post' implies something detached from punk generally, just with that 'this is derived from punk' flavour

alright, just punk then - you do get post-punk which retains the sort of delivery here (which is admittedly in-keeping with og punk)

I don't know if that clarifies or just confuses matters, good luck on deciphering this

the four singles + opener on this are half a perfect record. other half of this gets a pat on the head and a participation trophy for showing up I guess

Protomartyr? I feel like they are in quite a different vein of post-punk in addition to these guys' Irishness being a big part of their identity.

This album definitely has a larger goth-rock slant than e.g. A HERO'S DEATH or DOGREL, and Protomartyr strike a much more macabre nerve overall (which one might very well say is the essence that makes them the "post-punkier" of the two), but, at least in my personal headspace, they occupy the same sphere and scratch a similar itch. And strictly in that sense, Protomartyr scratches it a little more effectively. Not by much, but enough.

Back to a 4.5 with this one, still one of my favorites this year.

cannot wait to hear tracks like Skinty Fia, Big Shot and Roman Holiday live

the AHD material sounded immense when I saw them, can't imagine what this'll be like

Yeah I want to catch this band in London later in the year…just got to try and persuade a couple of people they want to watch them ;)

Don’t think the wife would appreciate ‘em massively, that would definitely be last resort option

Where there's a will there's a way, they're playing Stockton of all places so I'm seeing them there :')

Going with a friend who also likes them but I think I can always rope the girlfriend into going to gigs if I'm at a loss, she's usually game for anything.

Nice, they’re doing three nights at Hammersmith Apollo so I guess I’m joining the masses for one of those
