‘'cept that Relentless Mutation Archspire record for w/e reason‘
seems to be the go-to modern tech record for people who don’t actually dig tech. I don’t understand the appeal of that sound myself.

Zakusz
The album is still very technical, complex, well-produced, and even creative, hence, deserving of a 3.5-4.0 coming from what I value in progressive metal / technical death metal. However, the fact that it is so pummeling without much in terms of melody and dynamic variety is the reason why it just misses the 4.5 cut off point for me.

@Watt their debut EP has alot more of that catchy riffage if you're in need. Much more aggressive too.

If this is ridiculously technical all the way through, I can't see myself listening to this more then a few times.

Somehow this fell off my radar after some enthusiastic first couple spins. I'm going to have to come back to this one sometime this week

Decided to check this out again because, well, Forest Lapointe is a virtuoso among virtuosos. His fretless insanity is always worth the price of admission but First Fragment’s overall sound isn’t for me. I tried my damndest too. Amazing musicians - that’s not even debatable - but the combo of the power metal and flamenco influences are nauseating my ear holes worse than a filthy used q-tip. Where others hear ingenuity and progression I’m, unfortunately, hearing too much cock rock. Forgive me Forest.

their main guitar player is a power metal guy and the dude who left after dasein seems to have written most of the older stuff.
|

Had no idea they had a new guitarist after Dasein. The power metal thing also explains a lot

the flamenco segments are absolutely delicious ear candy to me
Having said this album is long af and maybe a touch homogeneous… really have to be in the mood for it. I would consider a drop in time as I haven’t considered revisiting recently. We’ll see.

Same, I like this album too but I can survive listening to it once every couple of years tbh
