i can see that, but he's also not talking about "looking hard in our pleather" or his yellow sheets anymore

This is already growing on me. I'll most likely raise it to a 4.5

Hot take: I view Schmaltz as more mature, not less. It struck a balance between gratuitous whining and the self-awareness that such whining was just that.
Just talking about new topics—like in Losers, Pt. 2—doesn't make it more mature, even if those topics are political. This one takes itself too seriously, especially given the picture Dylan's painted of himself in Schmaltz and Giants Sing the Blues: lazy, a little entitled, but his heart's in the right place.

It seems I just can't get into depressing downer punk like I used to, no matter how good the jams are...

Agreed. I usually don't like this style of pop-punk, but these guys just joined The Wonder Years as artists to buck the trend.

TWY havent released an album on this level since 2013

That bodes well for my eventual exploration of their discography because I've still only heard Sister Cities

The only negative about this is the first half second of the opener always makes me think “Bye Bye Bye” by *NSYNC is about to play.
Or maybe that’s a positive idk

Lol
I wasn’t really hearing TWY influence at first but “Optimism” fits that bill

Album Rating: 2.5
optimism is definitely their most wonder yearsy song
maybe i just need to listen to this more but them making like every song that wasnt a single in the same key makes it really hard for most of these songs to stand out

That was my first impression too, but I'm finding the songs have definitely distinguished themselves a bit more upon further listens. But yea a little more variety certainly wouldn't have hurt, though I guess this is pop punk so yanno

even then this has a shockingly low amount of variety in that department. like literally the only songs that arent in d flat major were singles, so this is like even samey by pop punk standards

I don't like how this band keeps putting the weakest songs on the album right at the very end either
|

I think I just need to come to terms with the fact I don’t like modern pop punk

You think the last song is the weakest? That's one of my favorites.
