"I'm not trying to make everything okay. If you don't like the new version, that's your call. Granted, it's kind of an empty comment about remasters, but no comment is going to 'change your mind'. So, it's basically saying 'your opinion is your opinion'."
oh good grief

Hmm... I actually thought the original was the best Cynic album, which means I should probably check this. No growls though? Let's hope they make it work.

Animals, are you always such a little bitch? Jesus Christ...

I'm guessing you won't like it.

Not a fan of this remaster. Might put it on to dissect drum parts more easily but overall it just feels less friendly on the ears. There's some kind of organic majesty in the original's fuzz and (at times) crowded mix.

I was really into this album in 2008. Never really got comfortable with the vocals though. Liking this new mix so far, was a good reason to revisit this.

I don't remember the original album at all, even though my 4 rating says that I enjoyed it when it was released.
Have to hear both versions anew, to claim what "is" and "isn't".

Can definitely understand madbutcher's complaint that the remix sounds a tad empty in the mid-range, but I honestly prefer the separation; it makes everything going on in the rhythm section that much easier to enjoy.

had no clue this was a thing. Im excited

The removal of the death growls are unacceptable for me, they altered a filthy sounding progressive death metal masterpiece to a clinical sounding prog-rock album.
|

This album was never "filthy sounding", or death metal in any way shape or form. lmao

As someone who never really spent much time with the original (and so as someone who's experience of this is not one of comparison), I'm enjoying this. It's oddly soothing. Don't love the drum sound on some of these tracks though. Some of the toms don't sound like they have any depth.

rofl "never death metal" it had a raw production with growls, now it is a boring prog-rock album with a clean polished sound.

I’m going to be honest; I’m a sucker for remasters.
Myself as well and you've convinced me to revisit this album.
Well done review Trey, wouldn't expect any less from you.

Always has been death metal, just doesn't fit your narrow categorization.

Ye he is

I like the bass on this a lot, but feels a bit empty on those songs where I know the metal growls are. Even though they're only really in a few parts of the album. This would be great for getting people into Cynic tho

It's interesting to me that everybody likes the removal of the death growls, yet so many people complained that kindly bent to free us wasn't metal enough.
Anyways, it's been a while since I've listened to the original, so I'm just going on memory here. I feel like the instruments can breathe a lot more now, and I'm actually having a hard time remembering where the death growls were because it sounds so natural without them. I also really like the red outline added to the artwork, it makes everything pop more.

gonna go ahead and say that "King of those who know" sounds absolutely butchered and boneless without the harsh vocals. Also the old production had a lot of charm to it and this just sounds like modern periphery sheen all over it. Blehhhhh.

So, not what we got with Nothing and You Fail me
|

Honestly it's pretty lame that they removed the growls. One thing is to remix/master the album, another is to remove an entire instrument. It's like if they removed the bass or the synth layers and called it remixed.

"Aww I'm moved by all the comments about the harsh vocals. On a personal note: I always hated them so good riddance!" It's the top comment by Tymon under this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n1iRZTQzlew
