same I couldn't care less either but that's the impression I get based off the buzz I've read online. my rating is always on the music as well, but North is the only song I enjoy here

I think as music critics we tend to overanalyze people's affinity for certain kinds of music. This is just downbeat pop with great production & atmosphere, and a medium amount of subtle hooks. It's not hard for me to see why it has such mass appeal. I don't think anyone is claiming her music is revolutionary. With regards to non- musical qualities impacting one's perception, I don't think that's off-base, nor is it necessarily a bad thing. When I know an artist's backstory I can understand the lyrics better, which in turn makes me pay more attention to the music, inflections and other subtleties that I otherwise might gaze past. Her coming out doesn't have any objective impact on the quality of her music, but if it fosters an increased connection with the listener, then you know what they say... beauty is in the ear of the beholder.

@foxblood fair enough, at the end of the day you like what you like.
@Sowing well said as usual. I’m under no illusion why people would be turned off by this, I just think people are too often to talk about image (which for pop is an important aspect admittedly).

yeah it's not necessarily bad, context can greatly effect one's perception of an artist so it can be a big grey-area. I often don't agree with your ratings sowing but your passion is infectious nonetheless
"I don't think anyone is zigzagging her music is revolutionary"
true, but with reviews unanimously in the 8/10 - 10/10 range it's implied that this is well above excellent which I don't understand personally.

Yeah I think image plays a role in any artist's success regardless of genre. We're all superficial on some level and crave familiarity, beauty, whatever. In this case she totally plays the indie card; because she pulls it off so well it's not much of an issue. Of course seasoned listeners, like most people on this site, know she's part of a very broad dime-in-a-dozen genre, but the casual 16-sonething year olds just browsing youtube may find her work eye opening, transformative, etc. It's no different than when I was 18 and thought Shinedown was the greatest rock band alive.

"zigzagging"
Stupid autocorrect, thanks for quoting that so I could fix it
And yeah I think the critical reception has been a little generous (just a tad), but look who is reviewing it. I'm a sucker for this style and p4k will give a 8+/10 to anything that espouses progressive ideals even if the music is merely above average. Outside of that I'd say it's pretty much falling where I'd expect it to; the 7ish/10 range for most publications deems a good not great album and she does demonstrate clear growth and artistic improvement here to warrant favorable scores.

Agreed Sowing. This isn’t genre defining, but it is bedroom/indie pop that I’m a sucker for and she does it very well. I can totally see why teenagers latch onto it and praise it as the best thing ever, especially with the whole “culturally progressive” angle of some of the lyrics.

And for the record, outgrowing wide-eyed naivety doesn't preclude you from enjoying this either. I like this for what it is knowing full well it's not some colossal statement album. And I still love me some Shinedown, too. ;-)

Very true. I’m loving this thing the more and more I listen to it. She just knows how to write those subtle hooks that are just nice to vibe to with really nice production and beat work. I still love Alesana despite it being done a dozen scenecore, but I will never not enjoy their work lol

last 30 seconds of bags is really good but it's like a bedroom popped late death cab song for like 3 boring minutes before that.
also I don't get why everybody seems to love these lyrics so much
The things you do
Only make me want to get closer to you
And the things that you say
Only make me want to stay
makes carly rae look like bob dylan

It's the lyrics mixed with how she sings them and the overall mood of the music. Most lyrics sound insipid if taken out of the context of the music. Like I said, this isn't revolutionary, but damned if she doesn't do the style well in a style i'm a sucker for.
