in the middle of my forest listen. some of this has too much going on in a bad way (genesis) and some has too much going on in a good way (evermore) and I totally agree with what you said about those tracks and their similarities in your review

That the quality of choirs, orchestration or whatever has improved is beside the point to me. It's cool, but he still has the same approach to music since the last 5 years or so, which is kind of a bummer since variety was his strong point during the Ki to Ghost streak, but after that it's like he felt really pleased with the way Epicloud ended up, and just kept building off that blueprint. It's tiring, to me at least.

Yeah, Lucca, I think I made my point wrong. I meant it more along the lines of his big fans tend to have him as a favorite artist, and I feel he has more fans like that than he has fans who casually dig his stuff. So it seems that way sometimes. Idk

This is a lot more free-form and ambitious than anything he has done in the last few years though, I feel like this is what he wanted to make with Epicloud/SkyBlue/Z2 but he tried to restrain it into catchier shorter structured tracks.
Thats why I couldn't get into those albums, the bombastic production and mix was just weird distracting to me on short poppier tracks, here it sounds fleshed out and fitting. I was burned out on the epicloud/skyblue style too, didnt really like either of those.

is it just my ears, or is this way better mixed/produced than some of his past albums?
Everything is still absolutely bonkers huge, but I can actually make out the different instruments this time.

I really like 'Why?', but i have to listen more times to get a clear picture of this album. BTW i like Epicloud.
to WhiteNoise, yes Devin studio albums usually have this mixing problem.

Listening to Hear Me just for Chad Kroeger's part.
Edit: And he's barely discernible.

Sounds like you only like the mellow Devy, which if anything means that you don't like variety because this is the most varied album he has ever put out.

addicted was between those right? wouldnt really call that one mellow

"album sounds like Fear Factory working with an orchestra to provide the music for a stage production of Disney's Aladdin"
now I'm interested

If anything that's a conservative description of how bonkers this album is.
|
| |
really? you thought it was that bonkers?

Parts of this are up there with Deconstruction in the level of bonkers. In a way, it's like Ghost and Deconstruction had a child, and it's kinda exciting but at the same time I don't know exactly what to make of it. Why? is probably one of my favorite things he's done though. His voice is made for stuff like that.
|
| |
yeah its no more crazy than deconstruction
probably better though

Deconstruction is pretty much metal straight through, this goes in a lot more directions musically. Maybe not crazier though, deconstruction was a lot more ridiculous with farts and cheeseburgers and all of that yeah.
