I agree, I think Morrison's lyrical and musical abilities were limited at best and virtually nonexistent when I'm in a less charitable mood.

I think that Morrison's abilities and talent were proven by the fact that The Doors ceased to exist

they put out 2, maybe 3 more albums as the doors after he died. like qwe said he had a cool voice and i like a few doors songs here and there but he wouldn't have had nearly the same kind of elevation to rock n roll icon status if he'd stuck around. most worthwhile contribution to rock was influencing the stooges early on

They released three albums that were vastly inferior than their previous ones and the only difference was that they didn't have Morrison with them. Regarding the rock n roll icon status, I'm not so sure man; he was a star before his death too.
