I don't think The Handler is "classic" Muse but it certainly takes them back to OOS and Absolution days.

Very good review, though I'd have been even more critical than you. I didn't enjoy a single song on this album. There were some good moments, like the riffing around 5 minutes into The Globalist, or some moments in Reapers, but other than that... ugh.

This is between 3.1 - 3.4 (if I was staff) for me. I can forgive pompous ambition even if it definitely falls flat like in "Drones," for instance. Drawing inspiration from Gregorian hit music of 1234 AD is a glorious swing and a miss. And somehow I don't mind it for that despite the glaring flaws.

I'm in the same boat, I've been listening to this more than I've probably listened to any other album I've ever 3'd

Reapers, The Handler, Defector and The Globalist are probably the best Muse songs since Absolution.

I think it's a significant step up for sure. I know a 3 doesn't exactly express that, but considering just how bad they have been lately, it's a very positive score

id give it a 3.2 if i could. if you play the album skipping [drill sergeant], [JFK] and revolt it becomes wholly enjoyable
