Definitely warming to this record; Ripple Water Shine and Old Jaw especially are gut-wrenchers, but I still do feel like PBTT are a bit conflicted on the direction they want to take, and it comes through on some of the performances.

Listened to this and The Lack Long After back to back, and I love both of them. They almost sound like two separate bands at times, but what I love about both of them is the passion-infused delivery. Both records boasts passion and feeling over memorability and technical prowess, which could be seen as a detriment but it elevates them in my mind and makes them more original.

I don't see why this is disliked so much. This really isn't all that different from their past work except the inclusion of all clean vocals. I will admit some of the choruses are weak but overall it's pretty decent.

Fantano took a shit on this thing.

I don't hate Fantano and sometimes he reviews some good shit I wouldn't have heard of otherwise but it's hard not to think sometimes he doesn't just dump on certain shit to seem kvlt and with it. His PBTT review basically just boiled down to "indecisive and no screams" which yeah I agree with but he really didn't justify the 4/10 imho.
But y'all know this is just my opinion, right?
Album is probably a 3.5 for me tho.

Fantano can be retarded sometimes.
Great album

I agree with fantano (and I don't always do). as a fan of this band since Old Pride, this is totally lukewarm. very underwhelming. it's like listening to a Christian Rock band and you ask your friend "hey who is this?" and they're like "oh this is Slayer they just sing with clean vocals now, so it's cool, you just need to let it grow on you".

I think fantano just doesn't like the genre too much tbh.

nah it's just Fantano recognises that there's a million bands in the genre right now that just make really lame repetitive samey ass records and he's lumped Pianos in with them. then again he dislikes Snowing so yeah he's not an aficionado.
i reckon much of the negativity is because this record is not at all immediate except for "Repine" and "Late Lives". honestly if you come into a Pianos record thinking immediacy, you're gonna be disappointed. there's a ton of records in emo revival that you gotta be wary of because they're actually amazing but take time. like if the new The Hotelier record didn't get the hype that it did, people would have given up on it waaaaaaaay before they fell in love with it or probably would have dismissed it before hearing it at all. the latest Into It. Over It. record from last year was also a grower but people gave up on it pretty much straight away.

This band is such a different experience with the new vocal style... I didn't really like the vocals of them in the first place but i thought the instrumentation was something special... after listening to this once i'm not sure what I think
