Like Knott said in this review, we don't really know what the 'real' dredg sound is...

"My World: 1.2
My World 2.0: 1.3"

Oh, right. Well for one, all of Britney Spears' album rate at least 0.6 more than this. That is quite fucked up. What the hell has happened to dredg? This is ridiculous.

I didn't bother to neg the review, but I didn't like it much.

My problem is that the majority of the review is a discussion of dredg's career arc, and there is very little discussion of the actual music on this album. Would be great writing for a blog somewhere, but I think it's a stretch to even call this an album review. Maybe that's just a pet peeve of mine about reviews on this site.

You also spend some time discussing how this album fits into the context of dredg's canon, but you don't even mention the fact that this album is a one-off collaboration with Dan the Automator. Once you consider that piece of information, it's a little easier to dismiss the album as the joker in the pack.

Thanks. I don't really agree with your first point, I think the third (proper) paragraph addresses that, but I certainly understand where you're coming from in your second.

I don't really like dredg to begin with, but I'm disappointed to hear this. This sounds like shit

Decent review, but not great.

This band believes in experimentation and change. This album, while seriously flawed, is nothing more than another attempt to break new ground and try new things. I don't really understand why you were expecting it to "answer" anything about the band.

In my eyes, there's no question that Dredg is a fantastic band. There's also no question that this album is the weakest of their catalog.

It's actually really disappointing because a collaboration with Dan the Automator had the potential to be really interesting and unique. Unfortunately, this ends up feeling sparse (not in a good way) and underwhelming. The "beats" are not upbeat or intricate at all. When you compare that with Dino's work on the previous albums, it's easy to see why this comes off as kind of boring.

Another Tribe, Upon Returning, and The Ornament show what this album COULD and maybe should have been. The rest of the songs just miss in one way or another.

Down Without a Fight might as well be on a Kenna album. The rest of the songs really seem to lack the mixture of pop hooks, intricate drums and the mix of delicate/crunching guitars that makes Dredg really stand out.

I'm not going to say this album sucks. I'd probably give a 3. But it certainly isn't what it could have been and it doesn't compare to their previous work. I loved CWA, El Cielo, Pariah, and Leitmotif, probably in that order. Meh.

My point in saying that it doesn't answer anything is that barely any of the personality that could have previously been construed as dredgian shows its face on this record. It's not the record's sonic textures I have a problem with so much as the face it wears while it plays them. It feels in absolutely no way part of the dredg catalogue, and I don't mean that in terms of how it sounds, I mean it in terms of its approach to songwriting and the way it carries itself.

I think there is definitely question that dredg are a "fantastic band". It takes a lot for Sputnik to turn on a band that has been revered for their previous albums and the fact that a website where such a vast number of people love El Cielo and (here, to a lesser extent) CWA/Pariah can afford a new record a rating as low as this is indicative of the drop in quality. And it's not just the fact that this is a departure from their regular sound - people around these parts usually find angles from which to approach these sorts of albums which enable them to speak highly of them, but it's not about it being more chill or whatever, it's about how lazy it sounds.

Plenty of good points, though.

Fair enough, Knott.

In many ways, it does feel lazy. I can't argue that.

You did discuss the music on this album, but someone that had never listened to dredg before wouldn't be left with much of an impression about the album after reading this review other than the fact that it's not as good as their previous work.

Like I said, I think it's good writing. I just prefer album reviews to have more of a focus on the music, with history and all else to be secondary (if even mentioned at all).

Honestly the majority of what I write swings wildly the other way - I tend to hardly mention context. But I felt that in this situation the poor nature of this specific album came so out of left field that it was important to place it on a timeline of sorts and try to work out what dredg were trying to do with it. But I appreciate the comments, it's so rare anyone actually bothers to give proper feedback on reviews.

I guess I see what you mean. Without context, this is a just a boring pop album. Despite the hyperbole from disappointed dredg fans, there's really nothing exceptionally bad about the album. So I guess it would be hard to write something interesting about an album this uninteresting. Within the context of the rest of dredg's career, you can at least discuss what the hell happened.

Great review. People get butthurt if you bother giving any backstory of the band whatsoever...it's idiotic. Go out and find a review that doesn't do that...(there aren't many). Great review and this sucks.

"where did you learn what a fragment was, non english land? LOL"

I learned it at college. Where did you learn it? Yahoo Answers?

Truthfully I exaggerated on that critique. There aren't many fragments, but a lot of the sentences do

begin and end unnaturally, such as "Which is not to say..."

This isn't as terrible as most everyone has made it out to be. Needless to say I was disappointed but for what it is, it's just not terrible.
