Also Smile was never finished, it’s called The Smile Sessions for a reason

It’ll never be finished and as soon as people understand that… maybe they’re realize that it’s for the best

Okay I think I’m done reccing you things, that’s like a Colton-level bad take. Do you hate joy?

Johnny just does it all to feed their ego, anyway. Even the stuff they like, they don't feel it. Johnny is like the music listening version of American Psycho

ArsMoriendi* can't tell if you are intentionally ignoring that Brian Wilson did finally finish Smile though he hired musicians to help, or if you really hate the album

90m80s: Are you talking about Brian Wilson Presents Smile that he made in the 90s? Because don’t even Beach Boy fans basically ignore that except for the completionists?

Hmm yeah I ignore that one

This is so much better. Lo-Fi psych before it was even an idea’s idea. Dank, eerie, simple and tender except the singles

Really makes sense that Brian Wilson was in a sandbox when he was writing this stuff

People were pretty massive on the 2004 Smile, though it’s hard to say whether it was replaced for many by the Sessions as a full realization of the intended work

Though neither of those contend with people who think This is the one

If 60s demos that were touched up in 2011 can replace a newly recorded work form 2004, how good was that 2004 recording really? Maybe a logical fallacy in there, but I hope you get my point

I figure that the really positive reception was split between those who were inherently pleased to see Smile “finished” and those who were moved by the old-man elements of Wilson’s re-recording, and that those who would slot themselves into the former camp primarily moved on in 2011. But I do remember being moved by the latter element.

I feel like Brian Wilson Presents Smile/The Smile Sessions are an idealization of what Smile could’ve been but isn’t and Smiley Smile was the reality

Ugh sorry I’m romanticizing this but it’s just so idk how to explain it… unique and occupies an emotional space, the empty eerie part of wind chimes where it creaks is kinda like what I mean more than the bombastic parts of the singles

Well said, and probably not a take offered often enough for the reality of the situation

I also need to understand the setup of that Johnny 5-scrubbing list to understand fully how lame that last-page jab was. Did Storm consent to being involved in the list and if not why is Johnny lording over Storm the possibility of withering critique via an evaluation system he himself called into being arbitrarily. Or maybe it was cool

storm v ghandhi = high school emotional roller-coaster vs. dispassionate supercanon

evaluation system = spontaneous rather than arbitrary, v much not arbitrary in that it's predicated on how much i relate to and respect (or otherwise) the merits of either list

and if my disposition were really what storm had earlier suggested, i would have been entirely incapable of conceding a single victory to him in that match. not so much a thread as an extension of his logical fallacy

you are welcome

Nah I mean you can explain it but it’s funny to create (this is what’s arbitrary) a list comparing two unwitting suspects’ taste profiles and then threaten one of them retroactively with a bad performance (or worse ask them to be thankful for how they performed). “I could have very easily failed you here” works when it’s for school, not a test you created for no reason that Storm presumably didn’t beg to take

It’s all good tho I think you’re more right about this album/the material than most
