How can you not like Lover You Should've Come Over and So Real? They're both really strong alt-rock tracks and So Real has like his best vocal chops on the whole album
|
| |
I mean i'm having basing them off "iirc" and half basing them off I literally just listened to them both a minute ago and didn't like them.
Simple answer is I don't like them. Long answer is that I prefer when Jeff Buckley's voice is accompanying actually good music : ) (or at least the more juicier cuts here)
Dream Brother is easily my favorite on here tbh

Idk I reckon that run through Lilac Wine to Corpus Christi makes this album. I really don't feel the fact that there are 3 covers on here holds that much weight as criticism. Some of the most fantastic artists of all time were there strongest in interpretive performance, Jeff Buckley's case in point, I like his version of Hallelujah exponentially more than Cohen's

I actually agree with that Jas. Most of my serious comments have a level of dickness or snarkyness to them so I kind of leave out key details. It's not that relying on covers is bad. I think though, that with those 3 songs being some of the most critically acclaimed on the record, and with Buckley's writing generally being a bit too mediocre at times (that's obviously an opinion I hold and not one the majority holds) it is more so a weak spot in the artist than the record. But it absolutely relates to the album in my opinion, because to me it just goes to show how Jeff Buckley's beautiful angelic voice almost covers TOO MANY weak points on the album.
Like you just said : "How can you not like Lover You Should've Come Over and So Real? They're both really strong alt-rock tracks and So Real has like his best vocal chops on the whole album"
I think his voice is often too much of an excuse to compensate for issues. And sometimes that might work but for the whole album I feel it lets it down. Also, I love Lilac Wine and obviously Hallelujah, but Corpus Christi I never warmed up to personally.

@talktothehead if you are gonna hate on lover you should've come over you're gonna need more reasoning than its lolbad haha
Like what about the gorgeous accordian at the beginning and throughout, or the really unique guitar chords (look that shit up very abnormal) or the unique rhythm or the strange line structure of the chorus? Or the fact that it might be his #1 vocal performance? And if you just hate the lyrics because you think its about him whining over a girl, read them again. That's not just one of Jeff's best songs, imo it's one of the best songs ever and its not "lolbad"
maybe you just like being controversial idk
|
| |
YEAH talktothehead explain yourself faggot!
|
| |
idk man, i just don't like the song l o l
i mean there's songs where i can give detailed paragraphs about why it's bad, and then there's songs that just don't go over well for me personally, ya know? I still like a lot of songs here, and maybe I'll have a revolution with this album. I just don't like the song lol.
and no song is really ~bad~ here, there's just perfect, less perfect, great, and then good, and then so on. But not a "bad" song. It was an exaggeration cause the other material here is so fucking tasty.

haha I feel that, just find that opinion surprising, to me its a 6/5 song
also the fact that he does covers is fine he totally makes them his own so who cares
wait you arent even talktothehead anymore

My opinion could always change but I've spent a pretty significant amount of time with this record. I remember when I first heard it it was my nightly record. Man this thing is really atmospheric in the best way possible.

It's not really the covers that are the problem it's that I think Lilac Wine and Hallelujah kind of excuse some of the poor writing on here(see previous page). I thought I explained that pretty well but maybe not.
It's one of the reasons I want to spin "Sketches for My Sweetheart, The Drunk" really badly because as far as I know that's raw Jeff Buckley and it's (I believe) mostly original songs from him.

so as i understand this is just jeff's one track - hallelujah - then a bunch of redux', demos, live recordings and reprises of the track?
|
| |
No but i'd be a 5 if it was

sweetheart my drunk is really good, but way more stripped back (probly cuz he died before he could expand on the songs). It's way more like indie and grundgy too which surprised me at first some clear weezer and nirvana inspirations. Real good though, my fav tracks are everybody here and new year's prayer
Personally I love his songwriting and find it hella inspiring to my own music, but I guess that's just my opinion
