“100 gecs were an unintentional satire of satire by being genuine and goofy in a way nobody believed could be anything but ironic and now they’ve no idea how to do it intentionally”

Exactly this. This record is too self conscious about its absurdity to capture me like the debut. It’s kneecapped by being made in anticipation of being observed and consumed

Or...maybe they just like continuing the 'memey' aspects of their sound because it's fun to them? Awareness of why their successful does not automatically invalidate their next effort for doing something similar when there's enough new things to not make it a copy pasta.

^ Agree.

"It’s kneecapped by being made in anticipation of being observed and consumed"

This would hold water, if their new record didn't (in part, at least) contain some of their most impactful statements to date.

Also, a direct stylistic follow-up would just have people accusing them of "making the same album again", "having no new ideas", or "[being] unable to develop beyond a dying genre". That's a no-win situation, really.

Regardless of perceived expectations, this genuinely feels to me like the album they wanted to make.

I never jammed the gecs before this, so here is an unbiased opinion. Listened to this yesterday at lunch and it fried my brain a bit. I laughed, I cringed, I was caught off guard by genre mish mash’s. Idk what to think, I didn’t necessarily enjoy it, but I didn’t hate it. That fucking frog song though.

Hand Crushed by a Mallet (Remix) with FOB, Craig Owens and Nicole Dollanganger is the only track I had heard prior to this album and it is a BANGER. I was hyper biased on that one though considering I am a big fan of all 3 featured artists.

Well, as I mentioned on an earlier page, I'm quite taken with the album's opener and closer... 'Dumbest Girl Alive' in particular has what feel like genuine, lived angst behind self-denigrating humour ("I'm so happy, I could die/Put emojis on my grave"... "Is there something in your eye?/Can you show me how?/Can you show me how to cry?").

It feels soul-bearing behind the frivolous, shit-post/ADHD facade. The booming, crunchy guitar-based production feels apt opposed to cop-out in this regard. Also, it is noticeable that Les is using less pitch-shifted vocals than the debut, as I believe it was a means (in part) to create a barrier. Obviously, this is exposing and shows greater confidence, and is a good thing.

If having less confidence means more auto tune then I hope they lose confidence for 100,000 gecs

This album deserves to be burned onto unlabeled CDs and get lost in the back of the glovebox of your car tbh.

also have y'all heard the alternate versions of 757 and billy knows jamie yet?

Track by Track quick review:

Dumbest Girl Alive = best song on the album. So catchy and the flow is great. Hyperpop style instrumentals are on point.

757 = song has grown on me and I like how much it sound like something from the first album.

Hollywood Baby = best mix of the first album and this album's style. Catchy af even though it is so simple.

Frog On The Floor = easily worst song. I don't care how cute/goofy it is, it's only interesting for one listen this it's just stupid imo.

Doritos & Fritos = hated this at first but now I really enjoy it, probably has the most impressive structure/attention to detail for any of the songs.

Billy Knows Jamie = one of the weaker songs on the album but still funny and the death core breakdown is legitimately unexpected and cool.

One Million Dollars = slaps for a few listens but then gets kinda old. Basically "gecgecgec" 2.0.

The Most Wanted Person In The United States = dark horse track of the album. Reminds me of Butthole Surfers with the bizarre spoken-word delivery and hypnotizing instrumentals. One of the best on the album.

I Got My Tooth Removed = one of the worst on the album. Basically slightly better Frog On The Floor.

Mememe = good closer for the album. It sounds the most powerful and energetic.

Album is super fun as a whole but nevertheless a little underwhelming after the super long wait/delays and if they cut the shitpost tracks and replaced them with better songs it could definitely be as good as the first album. Plus I enjoy their hyperpop style more than the ska/goofy song stuff.

it took them 4 years to add 9,000 gecs which means it will take another 40 to get to 100000 gecs

Unironically they need to make enough EP's/albums to get to one trillion (1,000,000,000,000) Gecs then they could call it a day.

If they had replaced frog on the floor with torture me (and held on off on either non-Hollywood Baby single in turn) I would have maybe (MAYBE) 4ed this tbh, still respect these guys a lot as artists but I have lost substantial respect for them as posters and in a way that's an even bigger tragedy

Bit bummed how many people I've seen down on tooth removed, lyrics on that one are kinda goated though admittedly it would be much better if the ska parts were played in literally any other musical style

I agree Kompys, take off Frog On The Floor and maybe Tooth Removed with Hey Big Man and Torture Me and this might be a 4. Tooth Removed is really fun for one listen but then the fun wears off really quick for me.

actually listening to this now, some of the samples in these songs are making me laugh uncontrollably. Like that star wars laser effect in 757, they listened to this and said 'yeah that sounds fine'. Incredible.
