The new one has some pretty riveting ideas, starting to unveil itself properly now. It takes a while to unpack

I actually think Hawks was right, new one is not giving me a good impression so far.
And it's not much of the drone stuff, I'm fine with that, but the obsession with emulating Trumpeting Ecstasy. The track with the sax was obnoxiously bad.

I was gonna review the new album, but I'm gonna hold off on it (already got another writeup in the works). New one is... mixed for me. I appreciate the increased emphasis on atmosphere and drone elements, but I just don't think it all meshes with the band's core sound very well
If I do end up reviewing it, it'll probably be around a 3 or so for me

beating this was always gonna be a tough ask, but I'm trying to see it as a standalone release rather than a continuation of what I love about this one
helps with the cope

yeah, I've been listening to Spoken a bunch and honestly starting to backtrack on my initial optimism of 'something different but almost as good' because this obliterates it
It certainly isn't bad, just not a patch of this iteration of their sound for me. Even their use of noise and spacing is more satisfying here (which you'd think would leave this at a disadvantage)

Idk if this thread just set my bar low, but uhhhhh I finally got around to As Spoken and think it’s their best album to-date. The one-two of Revile of Light and Mereward goes and Portrait is 5/5. I don’t think they played any of this when I saw them but they had interludes that were super sludgy and atmospheric that may have prepared me more for this than the last two LP’s. Also not sure about the complaints here, the only track that’s kinda drawn out is Fettered Oath imo and it didn’t feel out of place. Funeral Grind is a good description and I think the album fucking rips.
