"This is legit, which is why fat shaming in the west (specifically America) can sometimes be tantamount to victim blaming. It’s a nuanced discussion and there has been an over correction by certain types to try and delude themselves that obesity is perfectly healthy and natural etc of course, but that’s a coping mechanism at the end of the day. You do have control over your health and weight usually, but we have a system that works against you. It’s not that different from many common mental health issues in the west in that way imo."
agreed with all of this except the comparison to mental health issues, which can often not be controlled. you can follow all the advice people give you for improving your mental health and it might just not work. but if you follow the advice for improving your physical health you will see improvement, it's just a matter of actually following it, which can be difficult for the reasons you guys have outlined

an interesting indicator of how unhealthy an NYC neighborhood is is the ratio of Bodegas to Supermarkets. really emphasizes how hard it can be for certain neighborhoods (especially those that are predominantly Black) to eat healthy--to add onto Pots' point about victim blaming obese people

also you mentioned ozempic before, my coworker is actually on that and has lost around 35 pounds so far. but it did make him sick for a while. he got over it, but he doesn't really know what the plan is going forward, if he's gonna have to stay on it for the rest of his life or risk putting all the weight back on. he's 64 though so might be a net positive to stay on it for him

@colton not a direct equivocal of course, just more using it to stress the fact that both problems have roots in a lot of societal problems and that the odds of success in overcoming these issues are often stacked against you

Dopamine response addiction. Eating shit food is not much different than needing that cigarette puff, drink of alcohol, hit of whatever...access to these harms is everywhere but it's a person's ability to have/sustain self control (or moderation) that comes into play. And we know due to genetic differences this comes easier to some vs others
