title track on Descensus is like right behind The Amulet now and just recently beat out Dyed In The Wool

100% confident Invent Animate would be my favorite EP of 2021. After spinning this for a few, I'm not so sure.

I've enjoyed Anthony Green's solo stuff and this reminds me of it, tho this is a different beast... really enjoyable EP, still gotta give it a few more listens

Its so good. I love dreamy circa. Some of these tracks almost give me HEALTH vibes

This is really solid, as expected. Our Last Shot & Sleep Well are probably my favorites atm

4.5 is very very generous. The overblown production and ultra crisp mix make it sound like a remix of AGs solo work, and even then so, AG vocals would still be raw and unfiltered showcasing his range.
Tldr: they put Avalon and Amulet together in a pop blender but left out the raw live sound they're so known for.

@ACMA - I do tend to be more lenient than most reviewers here, as most longtime members can attest to. I can get where you're coming from with missing the rawness; in this case, I think the EP works as an accessible piece with a glistening sheen that's different enough from their classic sound to feel fresh without forsaking their roots too much. While I love it personally, I wouldn't want it to be a "new direction" they pursue so much as a one-off EP.

Honestly, I think Circa has never put out a bad album but it is crazy to me how head and shoulders better Blue Sky Noise is than every other album. It's the perfect mix of energy, ambition, and weirdness that I don't think anything else they've done has quite gotten right.
Juturna is a cultural milestone, but I do think that it's youthful bursts carry it and help cover up its blemishes. The kinks needed to be worked out as they decided what they wanted Circa to be.
On Letting Go was a step in the wrong direction as it kind of collapses under its own weight. Still interesting and a worthwhile listen as they further cemented what the band would be.
Violent Waves and Descensus both kind of fall into traps of having forgettable middle stretches but excellent starts and endings.
Amulet doesn't have anything too egregiously wrong with it, but it also aims the lowest. A solid collection of songs, but that's really all it sets out to be.
Both EP's are really cool sketchbooks and what-ifs imo. I love this band so damn much

Wasn't too impressed upon first listen. Hopefully these songs will grow on me. Not sure I'd want a full length of this.

i genuinely think ya'll must be skipping the title track or Rites of Investiture or something if you think The Amulet lacks energy or aims the lowest
also wait, Nesting Dolls is like smack dab in the middle of Descensus, how can you call the middle weak

Sounds like we need a royal rumble match to determine the correct Circa Survive hot take.

i cast my vote for Juturna and OLG are probs their "worst" because this band undoubtedly continued improving significantly

juturna is best by a mile imo. one of the most magically trippy albums in the world. instrumental textures the entire record are out of this world and anthonys vox are the most hypnotic and mesmerizing theyve ever been
could also be bc ive jammed it a lot high but ive done the same w all of the others and idk theyre j missing that added mystical quality, nor is any other album as consistent
