Yeah there's something about how Cave and Liddiard have the potential to say anything in a song no matter how visceral, vile, disgusting, uncomfortable, or thought provoking. To me these two men are almost synonymous as songwriters (albeit with their own special sound)

The only thing I know about Nick Cave is that he makes music, is Australian, and possibly said the most based thing of all time
“I’m forever near a stereo saying, ‘What the fuck is this garbage?’ And the answer is always the Red Hot Chili Peppers.”

Haha I haven't heard that quote. God that man is unfiltered ball of wonder. If you like melancholy beauty check No More Shall We Part. If you like something with a bit of cynicism to it then check everything else

I really should’ve checked him out sooner than, like, today. Everything I’ve heard about him makes it sound like his music would be right up my alley.

My intro to Cave's music was the 1994 album "Let Love In", still a fave of mine. Bought it after I've seen the video of "Loverman", which pretty much sums up his mid-80s -> mid-90s output:

He’s literally one of the greatest songwriters ever
And I only started listening 18 months back. Obsessed

I even asked Cave in his Red Hand Files about his current relationship to that song (Loverman), and why it has been neglected from his setlists for decades. Still waiting for an answer from the man, I guess the question was not spiritual enough, and it didn’t contain some personal tragedy/crisis.
In fact, the question was about his transformation from a badass junkie to a wannabe oracle.

Yeah Loverman is top tier cave for sure. Certain parts of his personality don't lock in with me (the religious spiritual side), but in the long run he is my all time favorite songwriter.

Okay best place to start with Nick Cave is either Let Love In or No More Shall We Part?
Is there anything close to the Drones or this? Or are the comparisons just them both being prolific aussie songwriters?

I would check the debut even though it's not representative of the discography as a whole... but then again not sure anything is some of the Bad Seeds records are just completely different from one another (well I guess apart from uh you know Nick Cave as singer-songwriter)
I would imagine it's mainly the Australian thing

Let Love In is a fine starting point but I see Henry’s Dream as a companion piece in many ways, for all the variety within his work those two are a pair in my mind
Either way I’d at least sample that late 80s-94 era first.
The debut is good for perspective.
Outside of this gothic punk blues stuff Skeleton Tree is one of his best, but a lot sparser, more introspective. Also a lot less theatrical / bombastic
No More Shall We Part isn’t one of my faves but some people love it idk

I don't really see the similarity between TFS and Cave's music. Just getting into The Drones (Seaweed is awesome btw), but while it is largely simlar to TFS (no suprises there), it is pretty different to me from any of Cave's album, both wrt music, lyrics or vocal tone. Apart from both coming from Australia, I guess it is the narrative/story-telling approach where they converge, but as far as I can tell, Liddiard doesn't have the magic realism angle that is pretty typical of Cave's lyrics.

Yeah, as far as story-telling goes, Henry's Dream is one of the peaks.

you also might dig The Birthday Party, Cave's band that preceded Bad Seeds - I like Prayers on Fire though I think Junk Yard is the typical fav (lol might be what you're looking for though /shrug)

Yeah, I don’t necessarily agree either although I can see what Zakusz was saying about their story-telling prowess, even if the content isn’t all that similar.
So yeah, if it’s ‘most Drones-like Cave’ Wildcard is after then I’m stumped! Then again, I still need to check Seaweed.
And yeah TBP are worth checking, at least they share the noise rock direction with these guys.

well let's just say "noise rock" is a tag you might see applied to The Birthday Party, but less likely to see applied to the majority of the Bad Seeds catalogue (especially once Blixa Bargeld go bye bye, but even before that, not really much that you'd call 'noise rock')
I mean personally, I'd probably just stick with 'post-punk', but sput has Birthday Party tagged noise rock

Hmm idk TBP are noise rock for me
Would be daft to classify NC as such tho
