I more so was referring to the overall "Best of..." Charts for each year, which are getting increasingly worse with every passing year (though maybe I'm just becoming more jaded)?
I do agree that the genre sorting functionality is choice. I've had better luck finding albums I actually enjoy using the 'esoteric' sorting option, actually; not sure exactly what the ranking criteria is for that. Maybe standard deviation? But that garners more hopeful results than the Highest Rated, at least imo.

what is the difference between the best of charts for each year and the top album charts of each year isn't that the same thing

Yes...I didn't mean to imply they weren't. I'm saying the "Best of / Top Album" charts each year are usually very hit-or-(mostly)-miss in my experience, even more so within the past decade or so. I've found that sorting by "esoteric" instead of "top" usually produces more interesting (and in many cases, enjoyable) results.

oh yeah thats kind of what i meant tho you can sort the top album charts by a number of things and it makes them pretty easy to personalize

pots its the same thing but the quality of results differs between current year / past year and, say, at random, 1974 or something
if for no other reason than recency bias which is absolutely a thing

the beta sonemic charts allow you to change the weight of popularity within the ranking algorithm, which plays a big part into many of the super-popular releases that wind up atop the charts with merely decent ratings early-on and then just calcify there for the rest of the year.
too bad sonemic is never going to happen.

"pots its the same thing but the quality of results differs between current year / past year and, say, at random, 1974 or something"
i did mean the current year charts to begin with if that was unclear

i agree rym is useful in good measure

its a graet source of information
not necessarily a great source of opinion
though maybe the least bad source of opinion?
outside of electronic music and maybe metal

'its a graet source of information

this is probably the best description of of RYM that i've ever seen, honestly.

no, there's some very good metalhead users in there

Hello
Also, on an average rating level I agree it may not be the best source of opinion..... in my opinion lol. At least for the kind of stuff I jam these days.
But lots of good users and good lists!

>no, there's some very good metalhead users in there
interesting albums tend to have lower averages than some pretty meh shit tbh

I find that too

If RYM and Sputnik had a baby, it would have a pop-up telling you you're wrong after every post and only show white album art for every single album.

Sputnik wins in a fight because cliques are more pronounced. We're like the NYC of The Warriors' universe - a whole bunch of scuffed looking cunts with hands on hilts ready for action, way too sure of our beliefs to concede.
Plus I'm pretty sure that every non-Spanish account on RYM is a Fantano alt, and we can just straight mob him.
