"this is exactly how i want to hear synths and effects used in black metal. they permeate throughout the cacophony of instruments and vocals like an aura of darkness. riffs are not sacrificed to bring the synths to the forefront as a lead instrument. no, the guitars are the main attraction here, and they could have released this without the synths and still had a great album. but the way the synths are used and produced perfectly melds with the rest of the music and gives the album a truly nightmarish atmosphere."

Never heard these guys before, but it is a banger. Early (EARLY) front runner for (metal) AOTY.

so after jamming their whole discog again, i have an unexpected ranking:

Atrophy > Aeon > Epos > Suffocating > Ethic

my top 4 are all very close but still, it looks quite different from the last time.

Aeon is so much more crushing and straight evil sounding than this, but this is serene and really gorgeous at times. Two different beasts entirely

I never really got an evil vibe from these guys. Eerie, powerful, emotional, somber, desolate, etc. are what i think of when i think of DOG.

I should probably check Atrophy and Epos, may as well complete the set. I don't really get much of an evil vibe from Aeon either, love it though.

if there's anything evil on them, would be on suffocating imo...but yeah...your adjectives fit pretty well

Maybe you’re right, maybe evil is the wrong word. Just fucking intense. Smothering even.
