At Dawn is such a good song

2 minutes into the new one I feel these guys have gone done The Gathering went long time ago when they parked the doom and went on with smth calmer.
Really liking it so far.
Edit: Oh wait, there's alt rock sprinkled in for good measure too

are the drum fills still annoying on the new one?
|

I don't feel anything annoying with the drums so far.
Cammie Gilbert is absolutely owning it though.

Yeah Cammie has always been the best part of this band, but her vocals and the music feel like two completely different bands. The drums especially, I know Dobber Beverly is super talented and Malignant Altar rules, but it really feels like he's just being flashy for the sake of it and it's actively detrimental to the music

Then you'll find some moments of the new one are not for you. Overall I feel like they have built the music around her voice more than ever before though. Definitely my favorite thing they've done so far.
It has a couple of "oh whoa, wtf..." moments but overall it's pretty amazing.

I'm really liking the new album. I think they're finally fulfilling a lot of that potential. Are you going to review it?

@David: Fair, but this is one of my favorite modern doom metal albums :]

damn, I always thought these guys were metalcore whenever I'd hear about them, but the genre tags and similar artists make it sound right up my alley.

Yeah, it's basically progressive doom metal with female vox and occasional harsh male vox :]

New record might be their best yet

@David: Maybe I'm missing something, because I've never found the drums distracting at all. They fit pretty well with OoS's music imo

I think their cover of Type O Negative's Wolf Moon is a good example of what I'm talking about. I actually heard the OoS version first, but after listening to the original it makes it so clear how lacking in restraint the drumming is in this band. He cannot go more than 2 minutes without playing some stupid, overly complicated fill that ruins whatever mood the band is trying to paint, not even on a Type O Negative cover.

There are a few of those in the new one too lol
@Willie don't know if it was directed to me but I don't think I'll be able to review it this week.
What about master Koris?

I haven't been reviewing much metal these days, but maybe I'll make an exception this time around and give it a shot. It's a damn good record for sure

Look forward to reading it. Although I sense a rating disparity between yours truly.

Album Rating: 4.5
Yeah, I already saw your 3.3 rating. I like the album a lot, but it's definitely a far cry stylistically from what they've done in the past
But hey, at least we agree on this one! :]

Cool. Glad someone is reviewing it. I really like the new one. I think they're finally fulfilling a lot of that potential. They finally dropped the death growls, and most the random atmosphere-breaking transitions to death/black metal tempos that would ruin songs.
