"The general consensus for this record really is if you didn't enjoy anything post-Watershed, chances are you aren't gonna like this."
But I'm weird when it comes to that. Would I like this if I thought only PC was lame?

the fact that so far we have allowed another shitty uninspired 70s worship album to gain an average above a 3 is an abomination when people could actually do something interesting or noteworthy in modern prog

""like who in the band thought this was a good idea?"
Mikael"
can someone tell Mikael to stop being a bitch and bring back the growls tbh

I gave PC a 4.0...this is much worse

The avg will probably settle at a 3 imagine or even worse, Opeth avgs are misleading as hell tbh especially from Watershed onwards.

every opeth average is ~1.5 too high

I mean, this would be somewhat redeemable if the songs sounded inspired and Mikael didn't sound like he would rather be elsewhere
never before have I heard someone sound so bored

I totally get people not liking this record and Opeth as a band for that matter, but there's undoubtedly a negative stigma towards the band ever since Heritage dropped.
They'll never win back their old fans and some people will just hate this cos there no growls tbh.

Didn't think the Opeth fanbase and music fans in general could be even more divided on an Opeth album than PC and Heritage, but here we are.

It's not really that, it's just that they chose the least interesting sound possible and lost whatever edge they had
more power to them if they wanna make third-rate crimson ripoffs cool, but it's getting old

"but there's undoubtedly a negative stigma towards the band ever since Heritage dropped."
nah, there was just a hyper-inflationary circlejerk that has now (to an extent) subsided

I will say that the album art for this is very p r e t t y looking

A return to Mikael growling won't make Opeth's music any better, it's all about the songwriting.
The fact Opeth are 3 albums in this 'cycle' of their career now probably suggests a change in sound and songwriting on future records.

well at least we can all agree that the art is good lol

i actually love early opeth (still life, morningrise, my arms) but i'm really not a fan of blackwater and while damnation and ghost reveries were decent they've been consistently pretty shit since then

Yeah I really don't think they're going to make another 70's-inspired prog rock album next.
Hair metal is next!
oh god

I'm not gonna sit here and defend Opeth to the death cos the fact of the matter is that the band really really misses the heavy/soft dynamic.
I LOVED Heritage but that was mostly because of how perfectly I felt they nailed the atmosphere of that record, there's only so far this 'prog rock' sound can get them as the harsh-clean segments is what made the band so unique in the first place.
