Lol @ white people not "getting" this. This isn't an album you're supposed to sit down and analyze. It's not supposed to be "deep", it's not supposed to challenge you with the lyrical content. The sounds 'Hove chooses on here are fun and catchy for the most part, and definitely "ride" for lack of a better term.

Don't get me wrong, Jay can put out a better record than this lyrically....but what does he have to prove? He wanted to put out a fun, simple record and that's what he did. Sure, subject matter is lacking and I don't dig a couple of the hooks (that Rick Ross joint gets skipped every time) but this record is fun and sounds great on a good system. People seriously giving this a one or comparing it to the steaming pile of shit that Eminem put out is laugh worthy.

Jay-Z isn't the same Jay that put out Reasonable Doubt, Blueprint 2, The Black Album, American Gangster, etc. It's unfair and kind of stupid to compare his recent efforts to those records...which is what I'm assuming people giving this a 1.5 or 1 are doing. This record is 'Hove having fun with nothing to prove.

In what way is listening to Jay-Z talk about how many Basquiat paintings he has fun?

No dude, we definitely "get" it. But it's kind of impossible to appreciate something for surface-level "fun" or "catchiness" when it's actually just boring as fuck.

"I went from the favorite to the most hated
But would you rather be underpaid or overrated?"

"This line refers to Jay dumbing down his music in order have a broader fanbase and becoming considered one of the greatest rappers alive by many casual rap listeners as a result."

lol thanks rapgenius, god if I have to hear another 14 year old on youtube say Jay-Z is the greatest rapper along with Eminem I'm going to off myself

Neither am I.

I feel bad that you can't enjoy the simple things in life. If I want to listen to something challenging or lyrical I'll put on Sunn O))) or Swans or Company Flow or some shit like that...but some days I'm like fuck it, I don't want listening to music to be a task or a chore, I want to put on something fun & simple in the whip like Gucci Mane or this and have fun. Sucks you'll never understand that.

Ugh dude there's plenty of stuff I enjoy that way. From this year alone, Sophie's Bipp/Elle release, albums from Swindle, Disclosure, Lights, Letherette, and Kacey Musgraves. I have no trouble enjoying something light, in fact I find it pretty refreshing to find a nice fun album that isn't "deep" or whatever. It's just that this album isn't anything. It's not fun, it's not deep, the beats aren't memorable (though they are probably the best aspect). It's just bad, bland, and boring.

This is implying his music was ever particularly hard for the masses to like

IN sputnik. going deep I see.

Oh yeah, the Run The Jewels LP would be - if you want it to be - some good surface fun shit. Oh, and Cakes Da Killa.

I know that you're being le trol XD right now and it's probably hilarious or something, but is the rating in any part sincere? I like your reviews, I'd be interested in seeing it justified.

i could never justify a 5 rating, I'm just bored :P
