Such golds new album is great. Give it a decent amount of listens Chwit

I like the song Long October except for those vocals
|

Early Retirement is catchy as fuck. I'm kinda getting passed the "GEEEEEET BEEEEEEEEEEEEEENT" part and just not giving a fuck about it.

Forever Came Calling is good, Turnover is better though.

chipmunk of all the pop punk you hate, you like fcc?
|

Yeah, that surprises me too. They were good on the first listen, but they were definitely not as memorable as I initially thought. Then again, you probably have yet to listen to Contender a second time (or even listened to the entire album for that matter!).

why is that surprising pmmets?
oh, brother, I actually listened to it multiple times. If you remember, I've liked them for a long
time. I added their first ep on the database.

you can still see my ancient soundoff
|

But you told me you didn't like their EP!
Well, I have the tendency to like only specific songs of an album and listen solely to those songs
after listening through the album several times. It seems I am a product of the age of digital music.
That might be why I get tired of bands so quickly.

I said that it wasn't as good as I initially thought. I gave a 3.5 the first time, and then a 4.
It's still like a 3. The album tricks you into thinking it's worse than it really is because the
first 2 songs are pretty terrible.

An opening instrumental that leads into the second (and first real) song is a lame gimmick. I would
never want to hear that when I listen on shuffle. I like the chorus of "For The Wolves." It is quite
catchy. Listening to Contender again, I like better than I remember.
Have you listened to any of Anchor 84 Records' pop punk bands? I listened to their summer sampler and
was intrigued by some of their bands but forgot about them because, as you know, I had Turnover on
repeat all summer. I especially like Coastwar (Stateside on the sampler).

Yeah, preludes are either good or completely pointless. Usually pointless though.
Never heard of Anchor 84.

Here's their summer sampler: http://anchoreightyfour.bandcamp.com/album/anchor-eighty-four-summer-sampler-2012
You didn't really like Heart to Heart when I showed them to you, but I think you'll like Coastwar: http://anchoreightyfour.bandcamp.com/album/good-head-starts-bitter-ends

i'm listening to coastwar as we speak, i was checking out the band's on that label the other day. some pretty good stuff. coastwar are bordering on being too much like tssf and that side of pop punk that i don't love, but the songwriting is really catchy and technically interesting enough to keep me listening

"Early Retirement is catchy as fuck. I'm kinda getting passed the "GEEEEEET BEEEEEEEEEEEEEENT" part and just not giving a fuck about it."
Agreed. It's tricky to get over the spoken word stuff because there's not much else to concentrate on at the time, but I just try & ignore them.
Hey guys, 'Contender' is pretty good... & I went into that album with rather low expectations. Like I compared in the review, I preferred Handguns' early work to FCC, but 'Contender' is clearly better than this.

the more i listen to this album the more I like it. You start to get past some of the vocal problems (which weren't a problem for me anyway) and get sucked in to the youthful energy. There is something in the way the album is produced that fits the whole concept for me at least. I wouldn't want a perfect or even better production for this band but it shows there is still room to grow. For comparison I enjoy the production on TSSF's earlier EP's over Under Soil and Dirt because I felt that it better fit the band if that makes sense

Add in We Still Dream to that list, Davey. They good.

Interesting perspective Adam. Not a bad one either. Tbh, I usually do get over vocals such as this with repeated listening. But I get the feeling that handguns rely on their catchiness more than some of the heavier acts of the genre & Taylor's voice simply impedes that.
|
| |
Coastwar is a veeeeery good band. Taylor's vocals were never a problem for me, except fro tracks like "Best Excuse" with the lisp. I could never get past the first couple seconds of that song.
|
| |
well for one they're more practical.
