Porch has said many times he doesn't like Hold Steady becasue the Replacements and Springsteen did it better. May or may not be true but I can respect that, at least a little.

But yeah, one of the funnest bands ever. Rabbit if you ever have a chance to see them live do whatever you can, its a massive fucking party.

The only way I could see someone not liking this is if they hated fun.

So Porch would not like it.

Ya I could see them being great live. And ya Porch isn't a big fan of this or anything like it.

false on both counts, suck a dick rabbit

i appreciate this kind of stuff when its done well but the hold steady is just some average, overhyped rock that wears its springsteen and replacements influences on its sleeve. it reeks of insincerity too. could possibly dig them in a live setting if i was inebriated enough

just the general impression i get from his whole bluecollar cast of characters approach to lyric writing. seems gimmicky

i don't hate them either, they're just forgettable

any artistic inclination can seem gimmicky if we belittle it enough.

Finn writes uniquely enough that the HS generally transcend their whole shtick in my opinion.

if we're speaking to who does it better or who was there first Brucey and Westerberg win.

yeah it's an interesting topic actually. i mean there's classic bands with a certain sound that other bands can imitate fairly effectively, but if it just sounds like mimicry of their most superficial aspects then its enough reason to dismiss them as phonies

on the other hand if the music gives off an authentic essence or feeling of genuine creative intent underneath it all i can overlook the similarities in sound to whatever band they're influenced by. with the hold steady i don't get that, plus the music is just ordinary, but to each his own and all that
