dbizzles, Transatlanticism is certainly their peak (and a pretty untouchable masterpiece imo) but I think they came pretty close on this album. However, I do agree with you a bit regarding Something About Airplanes and We Have the Facts.
That said the run from We Have the Facts through Narrow Stairs is pretty consistently impressive and if you count The Postal Service's album Ben Gibbard was at absolute top game as a songwriter from 2001-2003.

I do plan to give these early albums more attention. There's some good, genuine stuff here.

Give the Stability EP a try too maybe, a different vibe for them on that one (it's very slowcore) but it's great.

Styrofoam Plates might be Gibbard's lyrical peak tbh. That song blew my mind the first time I heard it

It’s a very uncharacteristic song for Gibbard given the subject matter and the deeply bitter tone but it’s indeed truly affecting and I love it all the more because of it.

@TheBoneyKing — damn, now this is good. Gonna be at least a 4 for me. The opening three song stretch is brilliant. Styrofoam Plates definitely one of the best Death Cab songs I’ve heard so far.

Nice nice - yes this was much more immediate than WHTF for me, my second fav Death Cab. The opening stretch is indeed amazing and “Styrofoam Plates” is just incredible - so bitter. Don’t sleep on the middle section though! That’s where this’ll grow on you. This one always enters my rotation around the beginning of winter, so chilly.

Meant to respond yesterday but got caught up in a swirl of errands. It's up there, certainly the catchiest, though I think "Styrofoam Plates" might be my fave (that bitterness, like you said further up the page). Honestly that's a rock solid top 3 though I feel like I'd have to make room for "Why You'd Want to Live Here"
