"Yeah... that's just crazy talk right there. This is definitely better than APSoG, though."

Have to disagree. Don't know why you hate APSOG so much, but I love that album. One of their best

From the APSoG thread: "I'm sorry, but this isn't one continuous song. It's pieces of songs mashed together. It doesn't even transition well most of the time, and almost none of the pieces are fully fleshed out."

That's why I don't like it as much as their other albums. It's still a '3' so I'd hardly call that "hate", but it is a massive disappointment. Now that Jim is back into Metal and the band, I'd like to see another full album-length song.

Honestly I don't think of it as 1 song, that's impossible

I just think of it as an album with recurring themes. So many rules in prog metal that just aren't worth it

I'm not even talking about any kind of prog rules, I'm speaking from an enjoyment factor. To me, APSoG is even worse if you don't try to pretend this is supposed to be one continuous song because the individual tracks are so sparse and bland. Almost none of them can really hold their own by themselves.

Honestly, I wouldn't call APSoG sparse. It's not really flamboyant but it's still better written than most of their later albums.

It's not supposed to what?

None of the tracks are supposed to stand on their own. The record is meant to be listened to in its entirety.

And I disagree. There are a bunch of those songs that I listen to 'on their own' when I'm in the car or so... It was even my favorite record of theirs for quite some time.

I just don't hear it for some reason. Almost none of the APSoG songs stand on their own because they come off as pieces of songs, not total songs... but they also don't really work together because they don't really blend into each other or even sound like a natural progression from one to the other. It's just pieces of songs tacked together. I just can't hear it any other way.

After several listens, this has grown in me immensely. Compared to Parallels this one has more diverse and dynamic songwriting and I don’t find the production to be enough of an issue to make this lesser for that alone. Looking forward to seeing if the remaster is even better

The remaster gives it a fuller sound, for sure, but still not as crisp as Parallels.

Parallels does have better production but I can’t help but feel like this one has been unjustly looked down on. It does generally have a verse-chorus-verse-bridge structure (same as Parallels) but this one Feels more detailed in the writing and the amount of variety it has is greater overall. Especially liking Pale Fire (that 7/4 chorus is really satisfying),The Strand, Shelter Me, Island In the Stream and Monuments
