‘why are you under the impression bands reimagining old material is fixing it, and not like... reimagining it lol. both versions can exist and be good’

people don’t “re-imagine” things they truly believe are good to the extent of completely redoing it. these sorts of remakes are driven by a lack of either confidence or creativity, perhaps both.

you feel this way about Ixora Twin too? like the presence of these legitimately diverse and thoughtful reimaginings of those songs makes the original album lesser somehow? or does it have to be 20 years later for some reason

and you say it's only these complete remakes you feel this way about, so if they'd released some phoned-in acoustic snoozer of Coffee, that would be *more* creative to you than a complete reworking with clear effort put into it?

I'm sorry my dude this is baffling lmao I feel like I'm being punked?

'calling this a masterpiece is a bit of a stretch, tectac'

i was being hyperbolic for the sake of argument.

my point is that artists "re-imagining" their own previous work years/decades later is, in an overwhelming number of cases, driven by [1] lack of confidence that the original piece is/was any good, [2] a current creative drought, or [3] money.

i'm not referring to artists who might perform something differently live or whatever, but artists who literally re-record and re-release shit they did twenty years ago but updated to whatever is their latest sound.

thinking the original 'Coffee' is superior is my own personal opinion. but the fact that Copeland rereleased it two decades after the fact with their recently adopted dreamy tjmaxx art pop aesthetic PROBABLY means they are either struggling creatively or financially & in all likelihood were not content with the existing recording.
