I'd easily put Testament over Anthrax for the big 4. Testament is so underrated

I assume anthrax were more commercially succesful than any other possible big 4 contender? At least at the time the grouping was coined

"I assume anthrax were more commercially succesful than any other possible big 4 contender? At least at the time the grouping was coined"
from what I could gather this is exactly right, but in terms of music I'd say overkill, testament, and exodus >>>

86 you had metallica opening for ozzy so an arena audience was exposed to that stuff, they also had crossover appeal among fanbases (as did slayer once rick rubin produced RIB). people are very very slowly starting to put down ratt in favor of this sort of music
megadeth puttin out music videos and peace sells which has pretty sharp production, same with anthrax puttin out the indians video and a tight professional record in among the living. throw in the rap crossover and the fact that critics outside of metal fandom often praised. anthrax opened for KISS and ozzy around this same time. lot of people who might be into a band like GNR or faith no more would also dig big 4 thrash but a band like... possessed or sodom didnt have that appeal
anthrax also had the rap rock bullshit going on and toured with public enemy
bands like testament got surprisingly big for a group that was really just doing metallica sounding stuff with a better guitar player, they should really be thankful theyre headlining 1000 capacity venues and shit still. i mean testaments alright but they were never exactly the trendsetters

Refering to big 4 like it is something like spotify top100. They are popular for a reason but there is lot more to be find in the genre. But hey this album is so good it broke the barrier of the mainstream and the metal elitists! Please excuse my typing. I'm at drinking brake of a metal festival.

now on a personal level id take coroner, voivod, sodom, 100000 bands over anthrax but something about joey belladonna's basketball shorts made state of euphoria sell more copies than killing technology
|
| |
Ya know what belladonna means? And that is what he looked like back in 90s ;)

anyone here peruse old thrash magazines? theyre hard to find nowadays but old metal mags are a trip to read
hell i read a magazine from 88 where people were writing letters already bitching about the big 4, talkin about poser kids jammin metallica and happy ass anthrax. once youre into metal 9th grade never ends
