it's about the layers ALA. the massive scope that they build with the endless guitar texturing. they take this nasty, strangely tuned post-punk thing and give it an unprecedented grandeur. The Sprawl and 'Cross the Breeze alone make anything off Sister look straight amateurish

in short, you should give it a 5

SY is my favorite band but this nor anything else in this discog is my fav of all time... It's just literally everything they've ever put out blows me away somehow. Consistently the most genuine band as far as the punk ethos went.

Can't say I get that excited about all their stuff.. but this and Sonic Nurse satisfy every time. EVOL is great too. Still gotta hear their way early stuff tho

I have nine SY CDs currently, mostly late-career stuff... Not into post Dirty stuff? A Thousand Leaves and esp. Washing Machine are excellent albums, so is Murray Street, but for different reasons.

Early, early SY is stranger than ever. S/T EP is jerky, jumpy, schizophrenic dance punk before it was ever a genre. Bad Moon Rising is atonal tho often atmospheric and very, very ugly. I'm assuming you've listened to Sister?

For that era I've heard Dirty, Washing Machine, Murray Street, and Sonic Nurse. I can dig em all but the I like the latter two much, much more, especially Sonic Nurse. I like Sister but I don't jam it that much. This album kind of renders it obsolete imo. Their early stuff sounds intriguing as hell tho I gotta get on that
