My girlfriend of three years says Steely Dan sound bland, middle-aged and suburban (point taken), music you'd hear in an 80s sitcom, but that she can "tolerate" them. I am lowkey heartbroken

I really like how this album ends. Any World (That I’m Welcome To) is one of the few Dan songs that sounds genuinely uplifting. Looking for a new start at a new place with new faces. Then the album closes with Throw Back the Little Ones, which features the narrator stumbling on this new place, where he performs racist caricatures of Native Americans at a casino. Even when he finds a new place it’s still alienating.

Didn't know Zappa liked the Dan

"They’re one of my favorite groups,” said Frank Zappa in Miami, briefly speaking in a serious vein. “I like their modality, their melodicism. Their lyrics aren’t bad in that vein they’re working, that downer surrealism.

As relaxing listening music, I’d give it a 98. One person in our band, Ruth Underwood, would give them about a 120. She really fetishes ’em. She’s usually got their cassette reamed into her ear”."

I really like that analysis. And considering Steely Dan have always put a spotlight on people who are simultaneously alienated and alienating, it makes a lot of sense
