I was going to wait till the end (I’m sure it improves, it has to) but my word the opening run is like trying to pick morsels off a dinosaur carcass. Auto-pilot? They didn’t even build the damn plane.

Midnight Flit is decent, actually threatening to show a little creativity with the orchestral flourishes and wait for it... dynamics?! This appears to be continuing with the next track, I like the more restrained build.
I suppose something had to break the duck after the abysmal Ceiling Granny.

It all builds towards the finale. Proper album. Shit front cover mind.

Can I apply to get my staff cleaned.
I think I've got some hitch - hiking organisms taking shelter under my prepuce,
they've been feeding off my smegma for weeks,
they are becoming obese,
Gonna get my new friends on weight watchers,
Feed em some amphetamines,
Gonna get them to dance to Billy Eilish in a creepy necrophile way,
I'll nurture them, and show them the ways of Sputnik.
I nominate my Smegmatic organisms for staff!

The final track is indeed a good one, I just cannot justify most of what came before it. An EPs worth of material (maybe a stretch) drawn out to just over an hour. I’ll probably sit though the early tracks once more due to being an album fiend, but realistically I reckon you could start with Midnight Flit and be done with the rest.

Give it a few years you’ll love this one. I guarantee it.

Sometimes I feel like people wants Mogwai to not sound/do like Mogwai.
For the band standards, this is as solid as it gets (this far into their career.)

speaking my mind, boi! Ceiling Granny is so so so frustratingly useless because those tones are glorious and Mogwai can still rock when they want to, but the songwriting and pacing are acrid active turgid frogshit

‘Sometimes I feel like people wants Mogwai to not sound/do like Mogwai.‘
At the risk of sounding flippant, this doesn’t sound like my fave Mogwai albums, albums made by the band Mogwai. Also, it doesn’t need to sound like them, it just needs to show a modicum of song-writing creativity, rather than going through the motions.

I have never listened to Mogwai before and I think this is absolutely phenomenal. May have just found a new obsession for the month.

You guys are easily pleased. A couple of the back end tracks stop this from being a complete disaster, if I was rating this up until ‘Ceiling Granny’ it’d be a genuine 1/5 (that’s a Demon 2/10, not Sput’s ‘you can’t rate it any lower‘ 1/5).
‘Midnight Flit‘ + ‘It’s What I Want to Do’ bring this up from the depths somewhat. However it still fails as an LP/should’ve been an EP. Having said that I did rate ‘Hawk’ lower, so that’s something I guess. Not that I’ve listened to it in years.

Blimey demo. Harsh.
This is so far from being a complete disaster I’d call it a resurgence in form. Mogwai proving they’ve still got it.
Album is top drawer.
