Cold-Blooded Angels is kind of back to the most pop 1999 over emotive grunge ballads - Staind and the like
Song writing is officially suspect on this album

Yeah, fair play to these lads but I think they have run out of good and/or original song writing ideas at this stage.
What is this? Album five? Six? A lot to ask bands like this to keep churning out interesting material.
It happens to the best of them. Mastodon are struggling. Josh Homme lost it for about ten years and I still prefer his early QOTSA songs to the later ones. Deftones too.

First few songs, when they are rocking out, are really good. But it gets dull when they slow the pace down, and the production gets increasingly grating as the album continues.

First few songs are decent, and Pale Sun is a well worked closer

Great songs, but yeah, the production is sloppy.
The only thing, John should expand his vocal style. I can recognize him immediately, but most of the songs have those anthemic shouts all over.

Can't get into this at all aside from a few tracks, but this happened to me with every album of theirs, so I'm holding off judgement.
Also, wtf is up with these worthless interludes??? The ones on "Blue" were utterly beautiful, this is just meandering nonsense...

Besides all the bad mix stuff, for someone singing melodic you barely can get but a few words (exception for the ballads)...shit is annoying af..there's guys screaming who are more perceivable than this dude. Maybe this experience will improve with further listens idk

The production is the least thing to worry about here 90% of the time.

Agreed...this kind of production is a bit of Baroness trademark tbh...that's def not the worst thing here...

Blue is good but only a 3.5 sort of level - nothing this band have done has blown me away
Behind Mastodon, maybe a small bit ahead of bands like Kylesa

Blood Mountain and Leviathan are great, everything that came after those two - far from it. I'd take Baroness's worst album over anything CTS-onwards any day.
Kylesa have two awesome records - Spiral Shadow and Static Tensions. The two before them are great too but everything else - not so much.
