for the record, then the folk sections are still amazing, it's just the production in the metal sections that kinda makes everything blurry

Thanks! Yeah I was blown away by the quality of the songwriting and production. Usually you don't get something at this level from a sputnik user created project.

Struggling to hear the high praise from this review in the music. There's a bunch of cool passages and melodies, but the songwriting is messy as hell. Like whoever composed it has no idea of how to fit the puzzle pieces together. To me the songwriting seems like the primary thing to improve upon, let alone it being the strength of this release.

What's messy about it? The sudden changes in direction are what keeps it so fresh and lively to me. Who needs another black metal album that drones on for 55 minutes of "atmospheric" reverb and shrill growls? This implements so many ideas successfully. To me it sounds like Opeth's Watershed.

It's not about the changes in direction. I very likely abhor the standard black/folk crap that drones on forever more than you do. There's nothing wrong with a more 'progressive' type structure, although I'd argue there's a lot of room for improvement there too.

The dodgy writing happens more at the layering level, where rhythms and melodies often don't go together, yet get put together. The drumming generally is pretty awkward, with very.. eccentric fills. Guessing the composer has little knowledge of drumming. Altogether the writing is discombobulating in a lot of places.

It feels a lot like a project of a musician that's just started out and doesn't really know yet what he's doing because he's lacking theoretical knowledge and practical experience. That's fine in itself, but completely at odds with the rating.

I totally agree with you, Sowing. This is really interesting, and the production feels very earthy and organic, which is perfect for this type of album. Reminds me of a more folk-oriented Cormorant.

Gotta say, the EP is miles ahead of this. It's the perfect length. This sort of music starts to sound a bit homogeneous after long enough. Not suited to the full LP format in my humble opinion.

this felt like an unnecessarily extended version of the ep

Damn guys I'm disappointed that you hear it that way. I tried real hard to make each song unique in terms of atmosphere and "musical image" or color by employing different keys/modes, tempos, instrumentation, samples etc. while trying to have this journey type of concept and feeling when listening to the album as a whole (and keeping it short for LP format at 37min).

Thanks for giving it a shot guys and sharing the criticism!

For what it's worth I disagree entirely. I usually can't be bothered to listen to metal anymore and this rejuvenated me.

I retract my previous sentiments. Been listening to this a lot in the mornings before going to work and it's been really hitting the spot. Just needed some time with it.

Glad it grew on you. I still listen to this pretty much daily. The non-EP tracks are every bit as good as I'd hoped.
