I agree with butcher. The riffs and drums are pretty weak.

"ooooooof that's not a comparison i wanted to hear :["

I just meant the dynamic between the heavy parts and less heavy parts. The two albums are still very different sounding. This album is miles ahead of Exoplanet imo.

But knowing you, I don't think you'll like this either way haha

in that the less heavy parts are gorgeous and the chugcore fucking ruins it?

"This album is miles ahead of Exoplanet imo."

worth a check; though frustratingly disappointed with it i still think exoplanet is kinda good

I'm also getting Gojira vibes with some of the riffs and atmosphere, sometimes some nergal/behemoth tidbits in the vocals, overall I really like the blend of stuff on here. It touches a lot of sounds but is pretty concise and it's own thing.

Luckily not much chugging on this, or at least nowhere near as much as Exoplanet. Lots of dm style trem picking though. But I like that stuff.

I'm not sure I love it as much as some others, but I've now listened to it twice through all the way and it will go into my 'zoning out and coding' playlist. Vocals are great. Bass is great. Guitars are meh. I have no opinion on the drums. Definitely enjoyable.

" it will go into my 'zoning out and coding' playlist. "

does that work for you?

every time i've tried my brain just completely tunes out the music after a few minutes if i'm focused enough

bit of a bummer honestly

"I kinda relate this album to The Contortionist's Exoplanet album. The heavy parts are perfectly enjoyable, but things start to excel when the softer stuff comes up."

Officially checking this.

This is good but I don't think it's as good as Slugdge's album that just came out after one listen through

Don't get me wrong, the Slugdge album is great, but it's a 4.5 to me just because it doesn't really reach outside the confines of the genre as much.

Sludge's album is produced a bit better, I'll give it that. The one knock I'll give Owls (and I might update the review to mention it) is the faint "plastic" sound it has. Everything else is in Rivers' corner.

I just think the songwriting on Esoteric Malacology is better, but I'm giving Owls another listen

Both albums are strong in their own right. Slugdge however doens't use a saxomophone

I'll readily confess the sax was a big thing for me. I loved Maudlin of the Well so fucking much and when I heard another death metal band able to weave it into their songs without it sounding just like a novelty it immediately put a smile on my face.

Slugdge is very much more a "meat and potatoes" death metal album. It's got tangible riffs in a way RoN doesn't, but that's hard to directly compare. I'm normally not a fan of anything that even has a whiff of djent to it, but these guys nailed it.
