It's odd that I'm whoring Holographic Universe to death but when I checked out this album its just not the same. After the first 4 brilliant songs it degrades into repetativeness and genericness until the Kaleidoscope God and then Deviate From The Form.

Two best songs are Deviate from the Form (even though its completely out of place) and Mind Machine which is perhaps one of his best vocal performances.

Album is marginally decent compared to their other stuff. Slaves To The Subliminal is pretty much the only song which stands out.

Calculate the Apocalypse is the best song.

But The Kaleidoscopic God, Carved in Stone, and The Illusionist are close behind. Should throw Slaves to the Subliminal, Mind Machine, and Deviate From the Form in there as well.

I personally think this is a great album. I thought there was a lot of filler at first, but now every track's grown on me. Slaves to the Subliminal is an amazing song.

I agree with you there Captain North, Deviate From The Form is an absolute belter, I wish that outro would never end!

RE the debate of SS V Soilwork: both are flattened by the might of Opeth, so 'nuff said.

As for the album itself, easily SS's best work, see the AMG review for a proper coherent argument on this. No weaknesses, solid production, consistently good songs each coming into their own on repeat listens. Generally better lyrics than the other records. No "skip me" songs. No average "overly-technical-try-too-hard-and-get-lost-in-the-process" tracks like on their other albums. Bleh. End.

everything you said is the polar opposite of what this band does

Scar Symmetry is fantastic. Something tells me Christian stole your lunch money as a tyke. SS sounds like Crimson II with better production values and more melody. And better vocals.

I dont think you've even listened to PBP anyways so it's not as thought it matters.

you're comparing one of the best composed metal records of all time to a bunk poser band like scar symmetry, and saying they're better in every aspect...I dont even need to insult you

Excuse me but I believe you are pulling these comparisons out of your ass.

I wrote them as they came to me. I enjoy Crimson II, though not the rest of the EoS library. Face to Face is my ringtone.

I could care less if you insult me. You, and the rest of the anti-Scar Symmetry sheep have yet to make any valid points and tend to fall back, without fail, onto your bed of 'witty' remarks. Although I give you credit for being the only one to crawl out of the safe haven of the negative Dark Matter Dimensions review and comment on one where people think positively of the band.

But please, amuse me as to why Christian is a "mediocre" vocalist?

I've made a lot of valid points in my review of the new record, which coincidentally perscribs to their whole discography, whether you choose to see it or not they have been doing the same fucking thing for 4 records while riding the coattails of a dead genre while bringing absolutely no originality to the table how could I possibly be any more blunt

low growls...clean choruses...sounds just like any other melodeath act to me, and his performance isn't necessarily overly spectacular compared to anyone else either

It's funny how a band who apparently sounds the 'same' over the course of all their records some how has it's fans constantly arguing over what the best record from them is. Crysis dislikes this album in comparison to SID and HU, and there are numerous other people on this board who will defend this album or HU. Not to mention the arguement over the best songs from the albums.

This practically unknown band has in 3 records created a ravenous fan base who is relieved to find that this dying genre has been revived. It may not be entirely "unique" or "new" but it's redefined and fine tuned to a level that impressed hundreds of thousands of people. You can't deny the high acclaim the band has mustered in it's short 2 year run before Christian left the band.

As for Christian as a vocalist... Wow... Have you seen how many side projects he has? How often he's asked to do guest vocals? His growls rival those of Mikael Ã…kerfeldt (who recognized his ability and had him do guest's on his latest album) and his cleans are beautiful, and very similar to Dan Swano's. But then again, his resume speaks for itself.

They're unique to the genre but have throughout their career become bland, /discussion.

I've heard all his side projects and they're all average, so he fits I guess and what opeth album are you referring to because he's not on any of them

As much as I like Christian I cant give him that much credit because he cant pull off what he does in the studio live
