I don't have much knowledge of their influencers or the style they're working in so inevitably some of the nuances will probably be lost on me.

It’s born of having to get this stuff out not adhering to ‘influences’ ‘conceit’ or sycophantic claptrap.

Saying that this is the sort of thing the NME shites themselves over.

I'm not 100% sure what you're trying to get at but if you're saying what I think you're saying, I don't mean to say that they're derivative but just that they're operating in a well-worn style and that because of that, some of what is making this good or interesting for some people likely comes from the way that the band is approaching that style but that that's an element I inherently can't appreciate fully.

A band either is or it isn’t.

A collective who have the same passions, ideals, musical interests and who form and create naturally, impulsively and on instinct.

A band doesn’t ‘adapt’ or compromise, or restrict itself. It’s not amenable to the surrounding dross.
If a band were to say ‘let’s sound a bit more like so and so’ it’s not a band it’s a sham.

Robbie Robertson of The Band once said this clever thing "There are two types of bands. First, the 'hey, I got a guitar for christmas, guess I'll start a band' type; and second, a collective of actual musicians coming together to create music."

can you cite? seems kinda dumbly reductive but i'll give the benefit of the doubt in the event that i'm sorely lacking context..

I'm paraphrasing, of course. I'll dig around and give you the link.
